Anime and Manga v40: Repeated Thread Necromancy Edition

New chapter of one piece is up and it's going on another fucking break next week n just came back from one. Loved the chapter though.

Just finished the first volume of Alita, the deluxe edition, so the second of the original nine volumes. Really like it so far. You read the sequels?

Also reading the first volume of Vinland Saga. Pretty sure I'm going to like this one a lot.

Is the Akira 35th anniversary edition hardcover? I already read that series (excellent) but would like to own it someday.

That's what I keep hearing. I'm just past that part, and so far the first few episodes following that arc don't seem very inspired. What exactly went so wrong?

Did anybody see the 4-episode Kenshin OVA prequel called Trust and Betrayal? I thought it was one of the best short series I've seen, quite different from the main series with basically no humor or other lighthearted moments.

I've heard there's also a 2-episode sequel that shows the ultimate conclusion to the series, since I guess the original anime didn't have a real ending, it just sort of stopped? That's what I've heard anyway. That OVA doesn't seem as well received, plus I still have the finish the main series first.

I also picked up the kenshin manga, maybe I will just stick to that and drop the adaptations.

My guy, I love Kon's work. He's the only major anime director whose entire body of work I've seen. Perfect Blue is one of my favorite movies.

The trust and betrayal ovas are great. Those plotlines appear in the manga, but after the shishio arc. I strongly suggest you read the manga so that you can get a resolution to the series. Pick it up right where you left off at the end of the shishio arc and enjoy.

Wow. I always thought I was the only one who had read Good Ending. Need to read that one again. The one-shot was amazing.

Good ending was a solid highschool romance. I remember enjoying it, but it must not have been very original because the only thing I remember is that I enjoyed it.

I'm up to Chimera Ant arc in Hunter x Hunter

It's brutal and I like it a lot.

It almost reminds me of a horror anime with so many kids and hunters getting wasted by these things

One thing I am upset about is the anime sets up a lot of stuff that never gets any payoff.

For example, a big part of Yorknew city was about Chrollo vs Hisoka and you don't get to see that fight in the anime because the anime ends before that fight happens.

Another fight you don't get to see is Gon vs Hisoka 2 because that fight hasn't even happened in the manga yet as far as I'm aware.

I feel like there should be another revive of the anime once all that shit gets finished.

Right now the anime is incomplete because the story is incomplete

It’s gonna take a while for the anime to be started again. We only got like 40-50 chapters of material from where the anime ended.

Hisoka vs Chrollo is going to be amazing once animated.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm dropping Food Porn. This current arc has been absurd nonsense, and the ending of the previous arc (which basically the entire manga had been building up to at that point) was a rushed and unsatisfying mess. Booooo!

Peerless Dad is back.

And listening to the full Jojo torture dance ost.

Well, it's become very clear to me now why I did so little new reading last year. In the last two weeks I have tried approximately 40 new series. I have actually enjoyed...three of them (Peerless Dad, Solo Leveling, Undead Adventurer (Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha) and all of those were ones that had been recommended here at some point within the last year.

Oh, and Goblin Slayer: Year One is garbage. All the stuff that people complain about in GS that I tend to think is over-stated is absolutely a problem in this one. What a difference an artist makes.

Really really enjoyed reading solo leveling. It fills that void left by The Moonlight Sculpturer. Gonna have to try the other mentioned in your post.

Konosuba- Woof, this is just not for me. Remember me mentioning tone (of course you did, it was like five lines ago)? Well, this is a great example of what I don't like about Japanese humor: it's almost entirely slapstick and buffoonery. Something can be funny without the need for crazy faces and borderline retarded behavior. Hard pass on this one.

Did you watch or read this?

I watched it and I didn’t get the humor until a few episodes into it but once I got it it was extremely enjoyable and refreshing. Different from most anime I usually watch...

Maybe it’s not for u but I’d give it another go if you didn’t watch it.

Is it me or is the new Sword Art Online Alicization booooooring as fuck?... the story and action are lame and the characters are absolutely forgettable.

Finished Death Note recently and it was amazing. I don't think the second half was as bad as people made it out to be.

I'm watching Code Geass (and Black Lagoon) for the first time. So far, I'm enjoying it. How does the manga compare?

Watched Inuyashiki recently which i quite enjoyed. Now watching Monster which is different to most anime(in a good way) in that there are no squeaky comic relief characters or anything like that. It's straight up drama.

Finished watching season 1 of Girls Last Tour. I guess I can either read the manga or wait for a season 2 if it even happens, however I have heard that the rest of the manga that continues where the anime left off doesn't add much to the story, so it'll probably be the latter for me.

GLT was a good watch though; not much action or anything but a decent "slice of life" set in a post-apocalyptic world. The chibi main characters aren't exactly the deepest characters but they are likable. Also, now their damn theme song has been stuck in my head for like a week straight!

Also, for some reason I decided to watch the Animal Crossing movie. It wasn't all that good, but it was an amusing watch as an Animal Crossing fan nonetheless.

Probably a generation gap.

This was my shit:

Wish they remade this but Inoue's art is something extraordinary, better to just read it imo. Vagabond is amazing from an art perspective too.

Two of my favorite weekly series are on break. Tower of God is off until March for the author to take a break from the weekly grind (he's almost never missed an upload in the ~7 years I've been reading, and most chapters are very content heavy) and to plot out the next couple years worth of content. This Hell Train arc that just finished today started waaayyyyy back at the end of 2014. SIU does't dick around when it comes to having a plan.

The other series, Gosu, is on indefinite hiatus because one of the authors has cancer. Hoping he makes it through even if the series doesn't continue afterwards.

I watched the anime years ago and never enjoyed the Chimera arc for some reason don't know why. I just recently started watching the dub and the Chimera arc is brutal like you said. I'm really enjoying it. I can't wait for Gon vs Peto. I don't remember exactly what happens but I know some crazy shit goes down that's all I remember.

I think my favorite thing about Hunter X Hunter is that even though Gon and Killua are strong they don't power them up like so many shows like this do in order to match whatever the enemies strength level is.

No ToG until March?? The guy deserves a break for sure but damn that sucks.

It started off interesting, with the lore of the world, but yeah it's back to the same bland SAO.

I agree the lore was interesting but it just didn't jell at all and now it's all crumbling down...

It's way worse this time around though. None of these characters are that interesting. If it wasn't because its SAO I would have ditched this anime a while ago...
