In federal prison, you don't carry your "papers" with you, unlike in state prison. Papers meaning basically the record of what you were imprisoned for and if you informed on your co-conspirators in exchange for leniency, etc. Inmates want to know who you are because it's an us vs them mentality and they want to be able to trust you. If you're a snitch, they can't trust you. There are ways they can "check your papers" to see if you're a snitch or something else that they don't like. And if you are, then gangs (especially a gang you attempted to join and they feel betrayed) or your cellmate will often seek retribution against you.
How can they check someone's papers without having them? Will bribed guards tell them? Do they have access to computers or do they smuggle in smartphones? I get why snitching is bad, because if a person can't do the time they shouldn't do the crime, but inmates seem to have more animosity against snitches than serial killers lol it's strange. Or maybe not, they're probably there cause they got snitched on.
Prison life seems like literally hell, they really need prison reform. I get justice, but a lot of that shit is so unnecessary.
