Media Andrei Arlovski vs Roy Nelson - Worst Ref Stand Up Ever

We’re hoping in the Time Machine and going back to 2008 boys.

Have you ever seen a ref stand a fight up where there is a guy in a dominant position actively working like Roy was here? Working the arm… mixing in knees… etc. I remember it being bad, but was just rewatching and couldn’t believe how bad it was.

Shout out to BJJ Roy! Crazy how he went from this to a one trick pony KO attempt artist. If he combined the two and lost some weight, guy could’ve been real special.

I know this is in EliteXC, but both guys are best known for their UFC stints and both were “prime” in the fight, so I believe it to be relevant.

I remember that fight and being surprised that no one really seemed to give a fuck. This was probably Arlovski in his prime and he got a fight with Fedor shortly after this, but that stand up was abysmal.

I agree. People were sort of angry. It's was EliteXC judge manipulation. I believe the promotion folded right after because of the Kimbo fight.

Ok so rewatched horrble stand up not that i had doubt just needed a fresh look at it. That said Nelson could have protested more instead of just jumping right back up. Tough call in the moment i guess..
Yeah I agree. It was weird he didn’t bitch about it at all. Best case scenario for him was going to be to take him right back down to that position. If he wasn’t going to be allowed to work on the ground he never had a chance.

EliteXC was horrifically rigged and went out of business as a result. Was rooting for Arlovski so was glad it got stood up but yeah this was top 3 worst stand-ups I have ever seen. Rumble Johnson vs Vitor in Brazil = easily #1 though.

Edit: Just rewatched this fight as a refresher and it was just as bad as I remembered. 2 takedowns stood up and a cage control separation against Rumble in less than 2 and a half minutes ffs... The UFC was PISSED at Rumble for missing weight by a ridiculous amount and the fight was in Vitor's home city so the fix was in hard that night. The absolute fastest stand-ups you will ever see in history

Nah, if anything the stand up benefitted Rumble because he didn’t have the cardio to wrestle due to the weight cut. He’s also a scarier KO artist than Vitor

Yeah one of the worst I've ever seen, Roy could've won that fight was doing well up until that point. Gave me the shits seeing Trevor Whitman being so patronizing to Roy about the loss. Was glad Roy was able to win that season so comfortably.

Idk how lol I’m old. It’s just a couple of minutes in.

if you go to 2:17 and let it run for 30 seconds you’ll get the bullshit, but it’s worse if you watch it through.
Busting balls lmfao...I have no effing clue how to time stamp!!!

Had Rumble won that fight he'd have wins over title challengers in 4 weight classes

Hardy
Gus/Glover
AA
Yeah it's a shame.

I understand they were pissed at the time for him missing weight again, but downright fixing the fight was a beyond dirty move. If you want to fire him for missing weight, fire him for missing weight. Don't fix the damn fight to justify it after the fact.

One of the stupidest posts I've ever read. Rumble expends energy to get Vitor on his back, could potentially finish him with ground and pound or at worst control him for a decision, and you think the ref standing him up after 15 seconds was to his benefit? Are you mentally retarded?

I thought so until Vitor-Rumble which had 2 lightning-fast standups that were even worse. Rumble (who alraedy had a terrible weight cut) mentally folded after that

The fight was in Brazil and the card had other questionable reffing that favored Brazilian fighters that evening.

If I remember correctly, Bobby Lashley had Chad Griggs in full mount when the ref stood them up. One of the craziest calls I had seen at the time that resulted in Bobby getting hurt in the next sequence.

Lashley had(has) no cardio, and he wasn't doing much. Griggs wore him down.

I remember another event in Brazil (cant recall the fighters involved) in which Mario Yamasaki was pointlessly acting like a tough guy with some fighter for some minor infraction (accidental glancing strike to the cup or something, or may even have juat been a separation). I remember nothing about it except for Yamasaki repeatedly yelling at him, while the giy was being cooperative and doing nothing to warrant that behavior.

Then as the fighter continues to remain calm, Mario stepped up and started yelling in his face - specifically, antagonistic macho shit. It was bizarre. The commentators didn't even mention it. I always disliked Yamasaki after that. Total manlet behavior. Would love to have seen the fighter juat lose it and drop that sack of shit with a right hook.

sherdog right now reminds me of the current music scene. there's nothing new to play and so all they do is play eighties music on the radio. same with all the throwback threads going round.

Dude rumble only had 1 round of gas for that fight. He had a horrible weight cut. He ain’t controlling Vitor for 15 mins

Maybe, maybe not. I'll grant that Rumble had a bad cut and sometimes had a low Fight IQ when he faced adversity (such as knowing his cardio was limited). But you just never know how fights will turn out if X happens instead of Y. Belfort was also a front-runner and rarely won by outlasting and outpointing his opponents to a UD. In 40 fights, he only won 5 fights by decision and only one of those was in the UFC.

If they fought a couple of years later at LHW where Rumble was in his prime and comfortable cutting weight, I'd pick him...even over the best version of Belfort.
