Anderson Silva and Jose Aldo. Who had the better career? Is it close?

I imagine Aldo would trade anything to have the fame love and highlight reel of Anderson

Only hard-core fans care about failed tests

Also Aldo has one of the most humiliating losses in the history of combat sports

Silva has a 69% career TDD rate.
Again, I’m a fan so I don’t mean to bash him. But he fought mostly strikers and favorable style matchups. When they gave him someone who was good at TD’s, in Cheal, he was taken down at will. Aldo fought actual wrestlers and was remarkable at defending TD’s against them.

Silva vs Jones would have been insane.

I think the hype buildup and anticipation would have been off the charts... but that woulda been the jones that mauled Shogun and I think the fight would have been a one sided mauling that a lot of people didn't think lived up to the hype.

Also silva had a way better career. He's one of the greatest and is a house hold name your girlfriend and mom would likely know the name of. Aldo while great did not hit that level and his greatness is more something mma hardcores talk about than the average gan

He stuffed 58% (4 of 7) of Shale's takedowns in the first fight (while injured) and 75% (3 of 4) of his takedowns in the second fight.

He stuffed 80% (8 of 10) from Brunson at 42 years old.

Obviously Aldo was better at defending TDs since he is arguably the best ever at that. Said that, its very evident you just parrot sherbro "facts".

Sonnen was not "someone who was good at TDs", he was still to this day arguably the best ever at that at 185, and juiced up like crazy. Still, he failed 8 takedown attempts on Silva.

When they gave him someone who was good at TD’s he was taken down at will..

Textbook sherbro facts

Okami landed 33 takedowns in UFC. Marquard landed 34 takedowns in UFC. Brunson landed 36 takedown in UFC (including 3 on Yoel Romero). Maia landed 70 takedowns in UFC (including 7 on Fitch, 0/13 vs Silva)

...They all were good at TDs yet had barely any succes taking Silva down

Stop parroting sherbro facts.

Honestly Silva had a very impressive run, in his prime, most times Andy made the opponents look like they didn’t belong, save a few fights like Chael 1 or Maia, where he was injured or off. Anyway when Anderson looked like he actually felt threatened by his opponents, he would make highlight reel short work of them, Leben, Franklin fights, Sonnen 2, Vitor, ect. Initially when Anderson failed his test, I thought he was one of the undisciplined few to get caught, that being said, I’m not naive and imagine that most of them are on something. Now when I look backwards, I chalk it up as he was coming back from a nasty injury (Weidman and McGregor), yet Andy wasn’t a habitual offender, IIRC USADA cleared him of another violation.

Aldo had a similar run where he was making the opposition look like they just couldn’t hang, from the Mike Brown WEC title fight, up to the first Mendes fight, Aldo looked absolutely unstoppable. He had the motorcycle wreck that forced him out of UFC153, details were always sketchy, but we knew it was his leg and he never looked the same. Gone where the dangerous low kicks, and he just didn’t ever appear as explosive and his mobility wasn’t quite as good. He still went on to defend his title 4 more times, 3 decisions and the technical KO of KZ, but he would clearly slow down in the championship rounds, I’d wonder if that injury effected his conditioning in the long term.

Both men were untouchable in their primes, but Silva’s prime was a good bit longer, although Silva did have fights where he looked beatable. That being considered, Silva moved up to fight top 5 opponents, while Aldo moved down in search of another belt. I’m going to give Andy the slight edge for that reason, beating Griffin and then Bonnar short notice was impressive. As an Aldo fan I always wondered what would’ve happened if Aldo was able to move up without vacating his belt…? Unfortunately we will never know.

Also let's not forget, Anderson tried his absolute hardest to avoid Weidman. (An elite grappler with standup skills too) .He wanted to duck him so bad but Dana surprisingly said fuck you, that's your next fight.

And then of course, Silva got absolutely dominated and besmirched. Twice.

Another #sherbrofacts dude over here

Silva is a solid top 2 P4P GOAT and even has a case for best fighter ever with his longest UFC streak, GOAT MW streak, beating top 3 opponents in 3 different weight classses, having well over a decade of competing and beating the best in the world etc.
Aldo no longer even has a firm grip of being GOAT in his own weight class.

Anderson and I don't think it's really that close. Everything Silva did is much more memorable. To me anyway.

Anderson’s entire career has no credibility because of his failed drug test. Jose for me.

It’s debatable whether Aldo is even the FW GOAT. I say Volkanovski has already surpassed him
I think Volk is getting there but needs more title defenses.

Why do you have Volk ahead of Aldo in the conversation? Not devaluing your view btw. just legitimately curious.
