Pantoja is the only UFC champion right now who has completely cleared out their division. He’s beat all the contenders twice. I think he legit deserved a shot at 135.

Plus Merab didn’t have any super interesting options

I, too, was calling for Merab-Pantoja. Both have essentially cleaned out their divisions; at the very least, neither division has a clear #1 contender.

Now they're both just stuck on meaningless rematch tours.

I love Pantoja, but I want him to defend his belt as many times as possible. He is a real FLW and small for BW. I think there are a quite a few good matchups for him also at BW, but I don’t think he can be active in both weight classes.
Champions should only fight for the second belt, if they are really active and can fight in both weight classes at the same time, or if they vacate the first belt, like Ilia did.

Probably would make more sense than this. I am atleast kind of intrigued to see what the validity of seans claimed injury(hip i think?) and how it might have affected his performance. I still expect Merab to control, but interested to see if sean offers any more resistance this time around and can actually find some damaging shots on the feet.

But yeah Pantoja would have been something more fresh. But that being said, with horiguchi getting signed back, Pantoja at least has a fight already gift wrapped for him there at 125. The most name value he's probably going to find at 125 for a defense in the world that he hasn't already fought.

Do we know Pantoja WANTS the fight? If he wants it he deserves it given the matchups available at both weight classes. But I've never seen the guy in a single interview to know if he would even want to do it vs rack up defenses.

Pantoja talked about fighting Suga when he was champ and mainly because Sean talked trash about him. He seems not too interested in the Merab fight, but mentioned in an interview, that he has heard people talking about this matchup, he was not interested,
but if the fans and the UFC want it, he will take it.

Pantoja is the only champion who has cleared his division. No one else is even close to that. So if he wants it, he can have it, but I still think he should vacate the FLW belt, because I don’t think he can defend both belts.
