Am I the only one who thinks being a two division champion isn’t really all that special??

I'm waiting for the first cross-over champ from WMMA going to MMA and capturing another belt. Rhonda was going to do it, but retired too early. May be Kayla can do it, she is big enough to compete at LW or WW

its become a meaningless meme at this point.

I miss the days when BJ killing Hughes was seen as a massive triumph. the days when we salivated over the idea of GSP vs Silva

these guys need to stop clamoring for champ champ opportunity riding less than 2 defenses

Kayla would absolutely dwarf the 125 guys (likely in strength too) but she'd never make the weight. The strength difference with male fighters at 135 and above would be too big for her to overcome.

It’s a rarely in mma and something that is challenging to accomplish due to the lack of weight classes compared to boxing and the heavy culture of weight cutting. There isn’t many that accomplish that feat. It’s impressive

Call me old fashioned but I love when champions defend their belts against all the number 1 contenders in their division for many many many years, thats the way it always was and should be. I think those guys that did that like GSP, Anderson, Mighty Mouse will have far better legacys in the end.

The double champ stuff has gone too far now, its like they have zero title defenses or only 1 title defense and then want this so called "superfight", but its not really a superfight is it when you have zero title defenses, you're only just getting started in my eyes.

One of the main reasons we've had these constant interim belts the last 10 years is because of this, it just gets so silly.
And then the first thing the interim champ does is sit in the couch and wait to unify it. If the interim champ isn’t going to defend, you don’t need an interim champ.

I said this a few weeks ago and sherbros were up in arms

But it's true.

Pantoja and Merab is the only champ v Champ that makes sense RN

No

The only reason a champ should yo after a second belt is if he has cleared out the division and there is no clear #1 contender. Then the champ has built a legacy in his own division and it let's the division build up again. Volk going up to fight Islam was the perfect example of this. Or even when anderson took fights up at lhw for fun. At least Ilia vacates his title, but I don't believe he deserves a shot at Islam right away myself.

Not in favor of the idea in general. It hurts the matchmaking when you don't have fighters defending belts and makes it into a crapshoot.

I thought that was Fabio for a minute.

It only means something if they're going to defend both belts, fighting four times a year, two times each belt if they keep winning. No holding up divisions for years.

I know this is gonna ruffle some feathers, but I gotta say it—moving up a weight class to grab a second belt ain’t that impressive anymore. Yeah, it makes for good promo and social media buzz, but when you really break it down, it’s often just another title fight, not some mythical feat. Especially when the guy they’re fighting in the other division hasn’t even cemented themselves as the real champ yet.

We’ve seen too many of these “champ vs champ” fights where the divisions are a mess, interim belts are floating around, or the defending champ just barely got their hands on the belt. And suddenly this is supposed to mean more than a real, hard-earned title defense?

Real greatness is defending your belt—again and again and again. You wanna talk legends? Look at GSP, Anderson, DJ, Jon Jones (pre-heavyweight). These guys had double-digit title wins. That’s the mark of dominance. That’s what separates the elite from the hype.

Winning the belt is a moment. Defending it repeatedly is a legacy.

Let’s stop pretending a second belt automatically means more. Most of the time, it’s just another W on the record—unless they go up, win, and then actually defend both belts. Otherwise? Cool story, bro. Now go clean out your division.
Blab Blab. For real fight fans this should have been a given.

I'd watch her get the shit kicked out of her by an unknown male fighter. There's no difference between the genders right?
I would also watch her rag doll some manlet.

Which of the fighters mentioned do you not think had double digit title fight wins?
Is it Anderson Silva with 11 (12 if you count the Lutter fight)
Is it DJ with 13?
Is it Jon Jones with 14 at LHW?
Is it GSP with 13? (12 at WW & 1 MW)
You are correct, no idea what was going on with my math there.

it never meant shit. it only means something when you actually defend BOTH belts multiple times and nobody has done that.

when you wipe away all the hype, all the hyperbole, all the bullshit, what being a double champ means is all you did is beat ONE MORE FIGHTER who happens to be just a little smaller/bigger than you are. that's it.

You are not too wrong. Teh UFC belt keeps losing its value.

It's a meaningless accolade. Jumping an entire division of ranked fighters to get a title fight doesn't mean shit. And anytime someone wins two belts, it utterly fucks both divisions for a long time.

There's never been a true double champ and never will be.

i'll be impressed when fighters start fighting more than once a century at this point.
