I find McGregor's rapid ascent to MMA stardom very interesting, and I am excited to see him fight Aldo. It seems like half of Sherdog is discontented if one does not actually use religious terms when talking about him and the other half wants you to act as if he is a complete charade.

In this particular case I think it is safe to say that the truth lies somewhere in the spacious middle territory between those two caricatures.

I kinda disagree with what you said about Dana and Lorenzo wishing they were Connor and live thru him. I don't think that's how it is at all. I think Lorenzo is more than comfortable in his own skin. Dude is a frickin billionaire. Why would he want to be a piss end fighter? (that is not knocking Connors skills as a fighter just the occupation compared to Lorenzo) Like I said. They just get a huge kick out of the guy and as long as Connor knows his role he will continue to be their little pet long after his fighting career.

If anything they are bending over backwards for him. Even Conor's interactions with Dana, look like a pro athlete dealing with a fan. As for Lorenzo I think he just gets along with Conor because he likes his mind set and confidence. Chael was a clown and they did not day any of this for him because he did not have the conviction that Conor has and people can feel that.

If it is that easy, if it was merely a matter of allocating a larger budget to marketing fighters, then why wouldn't the UFC push MM more? He is a smart guy, seems disciplined in his personal life so is not a scandal agent, and is impressively skilled.

Why would they put all their resources behind a guy who may not be around very long? It is possible they are just stupid. Or perhaps all their marketing can only have a multiplier effect on a fighter's base charisma and so they market the fighter who is already easily marketable.

I know it looks like they're favoring him, but imo that's short-term. VERY short too.

In the big picture they potentially have really fucked his career over by super-hyping him the way they did.

I mean, there's a very good chance he loses to Aldo. that's speaking realistically. Can he win? sure there's always a chance. But i believe Aldo has fought much better fighters with much more diverse skill sets, and he's always come out on top.

So if Aldo dominates Conor the way GSP did Hardy, or worse.... what then?

There's about 50% of the mma community waiting to slam this guy.

Sure, the Mayweather promoting style works where you want to pay to see the man potentially lose. Works with Ronda, works with Jones....

But I think I Conor is way too young in his career to be putting this kind of pressure on himself.

to be fair to dana and the fertitas they are in it to make money, and conor tearing his mcl and acl certainly sped up the clock on the timeframe they had to milk him for all he's worth before the knee injuries start to accumulate.

and make no mistake about it, those knee injuries will start to accumulate, once your acl is torn once you can start looking towards the exit of your career as a professional athlete. especially in such a physically demanding sport as mma.

not to mention you not being able to put yourself through the same kind of grueling pace and body punishment in training that you were able to prior to injury. unless you wanna shorten the window you have even further. shogun and mousasi can both be found on record regarding this and the fact that they can't put their bodies through the same kind of punishment they used to be able to prior to their kneeinjuries.

Not only are you not wrong my friend, you're right on the money. A big part of it I think is Dana and Lorenzo living vicariously thru this man. Conor is probably quite a bit like what they wished they were.

A young talented polarizing character that people seem to love or hate. Because of that they are keen on having him around because it makes 2 old guys seem relevant and hip.
