All Time GOAT poll

I was talking about Horiguchi. You said he won a title at 135. I'm assuming that's what organization you were referring to.

DJ never beat any elite BWs that I can see.
Horiguchi won the 135 title in Bellator. Probably Rizen too but I was referring to him choking out Caldwell.

DJ beat Kid Yamamoto, Torres, and Moraes. At the time all 3 were top of the division. In addition he beat Joe B who was #1 contender at 135 on multiple occasions. He beat Dodson who was frequently top 10 at 135. And beat Kyoji and Henry who'd go on to win major titles at 135

Strength of schedule coupled with consistency and dominance. Also, needs to rule over a division for years.

Thanks for asking this question @Dionysian. It's not asked enough. Most GOAT debates, fans argue over the answer without ever agreeing on the criteria. They're talking past each other - legit "the answer is 42" sorta shit - and don't even fucking know it.

For me it's:
  • Dominance in the era is #1.
  • Longevity is #2.
So IMO Benson Henderson (not picking on him, just using an example) cannot be a GOAT candidate because he lacked dominance in his era. He was a) not better than Pettis, and b) barely beat Gil and Edgar. A GOAT cannot be oh-so-marginally better than multiple other opponents in his era, according to my criteria.

And yes, longevity counts for something. Someone who bounces around like Conor or CCC lacks in this criteria.

So the fun begins when two fighters in the same division wrecked the division for a long period of time. Izzy is coming closer to making that happen at 185. At 170 and 205, the #2 is debatable.
Thanks, but yeah, I'm bummed. Apparently there are 10 topics on the first page about who the GOAT is that DO NOT get merged into a 300 page GOAT thread, and yet when I try to gauge what fans think for their actual GOAT criteria and make it CLEAR the thread was NOT a debate about who's the GOAT, a mod buries my thread in a 300-page clusterfuck debate on who the GOAT is. Why bother trying to have actual conversation at this place sometimes...
Of course this is a global assessment and not confined purely to the UFC.
That's what I was getting confirmation for. So while the GLOBAL golden age of MW would be 2007-2011, the UFC MW golden age may not be the same. Specifically, the merging of SF and UFC (2013) made UFC's MW division much more similar to the MW global picture in that it absorbed all that SF talent

But you are purposely disingenuous in presenting an alleged global picture as equal to the actual tittle contenders of Silva/GSP, which dont refflect the gap in caliber of competition that you pretend with that "weak" vs "strong" obscenely biased asumption.

GSP didnt fight Woodley or Lawler neither.
The 9 best title defenses of Silva are very comparable to that of GSP, and Anderson has more nº of them in top of it.

I get that you're an AS fan man. I don't care about this argument you're having as I'm not trying to defend GSP as GOAT... because he isn't IMO. MW was weak in the time period you're talking about. It was strongest after they absorbed SF, when it was stacked. If you want to argue otherwise other than a time period (2014ish) when nearly-all prime versions of Anderson + Chris + TRtor + Machida + Mousasi + Yoel + Jacare + Kennedy + Rockhold + Bisping + Brunson + Whittaker were in a stacked MW, good luck.

WW wasn't amazing at the time. I could have said "medium-strong" instead of strong to be more appropriate. It was stronger than MW in the same time period was all I was saying.

If you compare the WW division from back in the day with that killer row of primed MWs you just listed, those WWs would also pale in comparison.
That's why Im saying you drawed a disingenuous comparison.

You could rankg GSP as GOAT or above Silva and Im fine with it, there are a number of arguments to do so. The argument that Georges faced significantly superior competition than Silva is not one of them. That's biased revisionism.

:D u r funny.. a fighter DESTROYED BY MATT SERRA can't be the GOAT, is a joke..

Some talk about been clean.. he fought before USADA, nobody was clean

When Fedor, Silva and GSP were in their prime people were saying Silva or Fedor were the GOAT, no mention of GSP.. Jones came later

Lolwut? You clearly weren't here because people have been calling gsp the goat or a goat contender for a long time.

He is so close to be the GOAT. Fedor is a little bit ahead, but retired.

I think Jones already passed GSP and Anderson.

What does Jones have to do to become the GOAT?

I think if he fights and beats Pav and Ngannou, that should prove that he is the best mf on planet earth.

Nothing, he already is the GOAT IMO. If he beats Stipe & Pav then it just further cements his legacy as that.

I think he'll smash Stipe easily but Pav could definitely give him trouble, very interested in that fight.

What does Jon Jones have to do to become the GOAT? Thats easy. Just be himself.
A more difficult question to answer would be what would Jones have to do to stop being the GOAT. Maybe if he lost the next 10 in a row, he might drop 1 or 2 spots, but hes 36 so the losses shouldn't count too much

Jon already has the GOAT resume by a mile. It just depends on how you view his USADA violations.

Losing to Pav won't change what he accomplished at LHW it will just mean he's not the GOAT HW.

For him to be considered goat by MMA fans I think it would help if MMA fans were collectively smarter and were able to realize that he already is.

what are your smart metrics?

Invent a time machine and not use peds. Fight DC at HW back when DC cut weight twice to fight him. Beat Overeem and several other HWs at that time. He will only ever be GOAT to those with low standards and fools who fall for his manipulation.

ill give ts a break and expand the question

MMA - he already GOAT

GOAT in all of sports? He would have to surpass equivalent accomplishments to:

tom brady
lionel messi
muhummad ali
wayne gretzky
babe ruth/ted williams/nolan ryan etc

Things he could do to pass Fedor's accomplishments:
  • Always fight top ranked contenders ;)
  • Become the youngest champ in a major mma orgs history ;)
  • Win gold across 2 different weight classes ;)
  • Beat the old guard and the next era fighters ;)
  • Take out the UFC HW GOAT ..........
  • Retire undefeated(*) after 15 years of domination .......

He is already.

Dont you have too much free time for creating so many void threads?
