The part I don't get is the instant sealing of the Court file. MOST places you have to file a motion and argue why having the file a part of public record is a detriment to you.

The court can seal it su esponte, or the parties can stipulate. Motions to seal are a pain in the ass if they’re contested. It is strange that it got sealed on an “emergency” basis.

Well he did pay a $10k bond that is forfeited, and that along with his pre-charging community service was deemed sufficient ‘punishment’ to justify dropping further prosecution.

Note that you normally get your bond back if there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. Here we have a faux-plea bargain that prosecutors worked up, without judicial oversight. ‘Chicago.’

I just read the article, and it never really states a summary of the findings and why they decided to drop the charges. Unless they release more details about the dropped charges, I'm not really sure what to base my opinion on.

Up until now it appeared pretty clear that he had staged the incident, and it seemed like they had quite a bit of evidence for that. The only explanation I can think of would be if they found some inconsistencies or inaccuracies in the story from the only witnesses, which were the Nigerian brothers. Without reliable testimony from them, they may have known that they could not convict Smollett of anything (even if he is clearly guilty).

But it may have also just been a case of a guy with a lot of money and a lot of influence getting favorable treatment from the law. It certainly would not be the first or last time that was the case.

Quick question, why are so many people in this thread blaming the Obamas? Lol. It would be funny it was not so bizarre. People really need to take a step back from the internet sometimes.
