Alistair Overeem HW GOAT?

he is an all-time great HW in combat sports but he can't be the HW GOAT in MMA without holding some kind of undisputed world title in the division at some point (SF doesn't count). You can't be the goat if you never had a point in your career where you could undisputably say you were the best.

Yep. I've already seen Cain being written off numerous times...even though he's younger than Overeem and could potentially do more if he can get his injuries under control.

these threads always pop-up after somebody wins. its almost cliche to be honest. if he lost there would be 'was overeem ever any good' or something along those lines. its pretty funny too.

in all honesty, i like reem and will cheer for him in his upcoming possible titleshot, but goat status? he has too many losses and disqualified himself with the PED fiasco

And that's completely normal. When a fighter destroys or gets destroyed is a perfectly reasonable time to reflect on them: to debate their greatness. I could see your point if it was some new fighter, but you can't say that about fighters who've been in the game as long as Overeem. The HW was scared shitless of him when he came over from SF. The losses he's had have been so dumb- he was wrecking every single one of those guys until getting caught, but now he's fighting smarter and he's on a roll. I don't see why we can't talk about what his legacy could be...

I use to think fedor was the HW GOAT now I'm not sure there is one for HW . I think Werdum could make a claim if he beats stipe, overeem and Cain again.

At WW rational people will say gsp is GOAT. At MW silva is GOAT. FW Aldo . I just don't think hw has an unanimous GOAT right now.

You never had to go "oh god nogueira,pleeeeeze dont fuck this up" when he was fighting. His decline came naturally at the end with old age and getting killed several times in fights that he still ended up winning somehow. To me that is true greatness. Overem is a guy who could fight a tomato can tommorow and your like "oh cmon reem....dont get knocked out pls pls pls dont do it..you can take this guy"

Werdum got raped by Overeem, and on balance, when you put their achievements together, and especially if Overeem beats Werdum again, there's no way he's above Reem. Nogueira is maybe up for discussion

Just thinking, if Alistair Overeem gets his hands on the UFC belt (And I think he will...) then defends it a couple times, would he stake a claim to being the best Heavyweight of all time?

It will mean he's a Pride Grand Prix semi finalist, and won belts in Dream, Strikeforce, K1 and UFC.

He's fought beast after beast and had a rough journey to the top, but I think that is proof of his greatness. He's been able to come back from adversity. I certainly don't think he's in his prime, but I'll be so stoked for him if he gets hold of the belt. He's a true MMA legend.

K1 - Different sport
Dream - Who did he beat? Todd Duffee who was flown to Japan with 4 days notice? LOL.
Strikeforce - His only quality win was Werdum. And it's pretty obvious the monstrous Ubereem who cut from 285 was sprinkling something on his horse meat. (This was confirmed when he skipped a drug test before the Lesnar fight and then got busted before he could face JDS for the title).

Werdum winning the UFC belt > than anything Overeem has done at HW so far.

never happened. First fight werdum won,second fight werdum was winning the striking exchanges and injured his knee,and overeem was so gassed,he couldnt really do too much.

That was a bizarre borefest of a fight. Overeem deserved the decision, but Werdum actually finished Alistair in their first fight. Let's see what happens if they fight again. Overeem won't be 40 pounds heavier and won't look like a comic book hero.

To be fair, he would be one of the most uniquely credentialed fighters in history if he were to get his hands on a UFC belt. I still think Werdum has the most impressive win ledger and Fedor had the greatest championship run but it would be foolish not to include Overeem in the discussion if he were to snag UFC gold.
