Lacking memorable moments?? How could anyone forget 29 year old Sigourney in underwear

I said Aliens not Alien, yes I think the latter is clearly the best of the four films being talked about, probably followed by Terminator and then Aliens/T2 reasonably close, all excellent films though.

I can't ever vote against terminator or T2.

Honestly though I think if you look at all these films you see why the franchises have gone to shit, young(ish) hungery talented directors making lean well written films. Since then the franchises have been run by execs and have depended way too much on geekish "lore building" that's made them bloated and dull.

I'd prefer Hollywood did something new but if they have to carry these franchises on to get a decent budget then I'd far prefer they just reboot them, get back to a simple story, cast them well and have someone with talent in charge.

They is a real Sophie’s choice TS. You’re a real son of a bitch

I agree, and that is true in books and in video games. It’s not to say that it can’t be done, but I think it’s unlikely to be done well. Of all the mediums though I would probably say games handle expanded universes the best

Part of the problem I'd say is that its often viewed as a cheap hook for fans, introduce some new piece of lore or some callback to an earlier film/character rather than actually come up with a film that will sell itself.

Fox especially did really seem to be cynical in that fashion, basically the fanboy dollar could be depended on to give them a decent return on Alien and Predator but also meant the films were never good enough to really take off. I wonder whether Disney might show a bit more ambition? wouldn't mind seeing say a Villeneuve version of Alien(maybe mix the plot up a bit) with someone like Johansson or Portman in the lead.

Alien vs Terminator should be a movie

It would suck worse than the Alien vs Predator movies.

All three franchises have gone to total shit. The most recent Predator movie was seriously the worst movie I have seen in the past 10 years. Maybe the past 20 years.

Terrible script, lack of story cohesion, bad pacing and editing. These are common problems with these franchises. A lot of the craft has deteriorated in movie making. Studio meddling is the norm.

It is because the producers have taken over the industry these days. It's movie making by corporate committee thinking.

Everything is about test groups and box office projections. Angling for those overseas markets. Just garbage, getting worse all the time.

That would intriguing, but Villeneuve is already doing the Dune reboot.

Also, I think the Alien franchise is too far gone at this point. Even Ridley Scott couldn't save it. Arguably, he made it worse.

I didn't say it had to be good

1. T2
2. Aliens
3. Alien
4. Terminator

Any other opinion is just wrong.

Really after the mid 80's stuff is more a quality gun for hire, give him a good script and he'll make a good film but he's not in control to the same degree and the Alien prequels reek of exec/marketing meddling to me.

I suspect part of how this happens is you have a culture were the execs becoming dominant and they view directors who want more control like Villeneuve as a threat, Lucasfilm recently seems like another example.

A lot of the reason the MCU has had success IMHO is that Feige is actually willing to bring in talented directors who want a lot of control and give them a reasonably free hand. When Ike Perlmutter was in charge Marvel were making the same errors as well fucking around with Ironman 2 and Antman.

Alien is the BETTER movie. T2 is the more ENTERTAINING movie. I went with the better one.

Alien for me. Terminator 2 is overrated imo.

Yeah exactly. Feige's story mapping, and directors with organized vision like the Russo brothers, are the reason the MCU / Avengers saga turned out so well.

Compare that to shit like the Star Wars sequels or the Transformers movies. Hundreds of millions of dollars but somehow no planning, no story cohesion at all. Just studio execs throwing stuff at a wall and changing things on the fly because it "tests better."

That's why I don't agree with the idea Marvel is especially "safe", Hollywood as a whole is safe of course with endless sequels but hiring James Gunn to make a film about a space racoon nobody has ever heard of?
