ALIEN: COVENANT (First Reactions from World Premiere)

I'd rather have a good movie than Prometheus.

It had a lot of cool ideas, but it fell short. If it's a choice between a "good" movie that treads the same ground again, or a "bad" movie that bucks the trend, I'll take the movie that's actually entertaining more often than not.

Let's not pretend Prometheus was some sort of hotbed of new ideas and originality. Sure, it was different than the Alien series, but that doesn't mean it was original sci-if.

I don't think the Alien franchise is the right forum for a human origins story. I don't believe for a second that Ridley Scott had that backstory in his mind as he was filming Alien in 1979.

Same. For all the dumb stuff, demystifying the Space Jockey was the worst. It was about the same thing as midichlorians. The wrong answer to a question we weren't asking.

I'm right there with you. I remember always thinking of them as this mysterious elephantine race and seeing a trading card of a space jockey carrying a xenomorph egg in a kind of "bird cage." They were a pretty cool aspect of the alien universe until they unmasked them and made them oversized humans. Laaaaaame.

I like McBride in the movie. One of my favorite funny actors. He can play serious as well.

I just want a direct link between Alien and Prometheus. The first movie kinda explained shit with hints but why the fuck was the alien created?

He said the script was serious, it will be cool to see McBride playing in a serious movie. I have a good feeling he's going to kill it.

The xeno we are all familiar with, or the proto-xeno shown at the end?

The black goo was a bio-weapon that manipulated the cells of anything it came into contact with on a genetic level. It turned those tiny worms in the ground into deadly cobra-like snakes. Given that Dr. Shaw was stated as being infertile, I can only imagine that the proto-face hugger that came out of her was the genetically altered sperm of her husband (seeing as how sperm cells and facehuggers are both trying to do the same thing biologically).

Proper xenomorphs take on the qualities of whatever host animal they are born from. So proto-facehugger + engineer = proto-xeno apparently.

The original space jockey had a hole in its chest, and was piloting a ship full of xeno eggs, so it's implied one somehow got free and infected the space jockey somehow. This is more easily explained post-Prometheus where the Space Jockey's "elephant" face is revealed to just be a mask protecting a human-like head underneath.

I don't recall them really getting into the origins of the black liquid, to the point of whether it was natural or artificial. I think arguments could be made for either case.

And as far as the xeno goes there is the chance other engineers learned of the ship's crash in Prometheus and investigated it. If they happened across the proto-xeno they could have deduced it came from the dead engineer's body, and prompted further experimentation to refine it and create a new, deadlier bioweapon, leading to the classic Xenomorph design we are all familiar with.

Suspense films benefit the aura of mystery. The less that is fully explained, allows for interpretation without outright explaining the unexplained.

But, from what I saw in the 2012 movie, the Engineers create and what was explored in the movie was what is used to destroy entire planets, so the Engineers can create again.

After seeing some of these behind the scene photos, I really can't wait to see this film. I got a feeling this movie is going to be vastly different than the first two, following the tradition of Ridley Scott and James Cameron. Sequels that were worthy of praise, yet vastly different from one another.

ALIEN: COVENANT Xenomorph is Called Neomorph and More Details Revealed

In a recent interview with Mark Goodier on BBC Radio 2, Michael Fassbender accidently let slip the name Neomorph while referring to the Alien from the original film.

AvPGalaxy.net can exclusively confirm that Neomorph is actually the name that the crew working on Alien: Covenant used for a brand new variation of the Alien encountered in the film.

The site also got some additional details about the Neomorphs. These Aliens are the result of the local ecosystem being mutated by the accelerant/black goo. Over time, pods started to grow on the trees and the ground, and release a spore when disturbed.

These spores infect several members of the Covenant crew by entering the body through the ear and nostrils. The spores cause the growth of the Neomorphs inside the infected hosts – something that is reminiscent of William Gibson’s first draft of Alien 3. One of the Neomorphs bursts from the back of one of the infected crew, a “backburster”. The other crewmember’s Neomorph erupts through their throat.

The births are preceded by the eruption of two small dorsal spikes. These spikes and a pointed skull are also used to break out of an embryonic sack (similar to the Deacon in Prometheus). The Neomorph resembles some of the older concept art of the proto-Aliens from Prometheus (see above), specifically the white colouration, with a pointed head and two dorsal spines. Upon birth, the Neomorphs move on all fours similar to the Bambi-burster from Alien 3.

When they mature, they grow significantly larger and walk on their back legs. They were more animal-like in behaviour with fang-like teeth. Unlike the earlier Prometheus concepts, the Neomorphs also have tails. In addition, the adult Neomorphs also developed a slightly translucent appearance (harkening back to unused concepts from Alien and Prometheus) as previously rumored.

Contrary to earlier reports, Alien: Covenant will not feature the return of any creatures from Prometheus aside from the Engineer and the Neomorph’s passing resemblance to the Deacon. It’s possible that the Trilobite was mistaken for the immature Neomorph.

Earlier drafts of Prometheus, when it was a more clear-cut Alien prequel, featured the white, slightly translucent variant of the Alien as a form of proto-Alien that was discovered alongside the traditional Aliens.
