I have been to many Third World countries, and to see American utter disregard for the right to vote when there are BILLIONS of people out there wishes they can have a free and fair election pisses me off to no ends.

I used to live in New York state. They have a ridiculous split primary system. The primaries for the state-level offices are in September, only two months before the general election date.

The whole thing, along with the idiotic voter registration rules, which Sanders supporters complained loudly about in 2016, is designed to suppress the vote in order to benefit incumbents or more politically connected candidates.

It's like that all over the US. Turnout is low not just because people are lazy but because the political class has made it as difficult as possible to vote. It's the same in red and blue states.

Pretty much everybody agrees that the legislation passed as a knee jerk response to 9/11 was terrible. There's no reason that you can't get rid of ICE and properly reorganize the border agencies.

Gotta be careful with zealots. She ticks the progressive boxes, but she has no common sense and a few really sketchy positions that don't seem well thought-out.

My optimism is that it has to get worse before it gets better. Although the extreme and laughable policies she supports could make for great bargaining tools for her more reasonable ones like universal healthcare.

Using the example of this candidate, people will take the proposal to abolish ICE (which I think is a really bad idea right now), and pretend that it means having open borders and no immigration controls. That gives them permission to say "you're the same level of crazy as Trump, so I pick Trump." Many of our Never Trumpers are looking for stuff just like that, so they can rationalize their support for the Republican Party.

You're right though, I haven't seen evidence of the left going full Tea Party, and I was worried Bernie's influence would do that. It could still happen in 2020 so I don't think the Democrats are out of the woods yet.

I'd be in favor of a gradual adoption of Bernie policies but the amount of manipulation and control by the dem party if it's a slow burn adoption would defeat the purpose.

Best to let it happen naturally. Definitely won't be smooth but at least it'll be legitimate and not a heavily controlled thought experiment.
