Agree FOTY is between

Can’t have a fight of the year in a fight that has zero knockdowns or zero fighter ever got rocked or wobbled.

Get that overrated joanna vs zhang pitter patty cake match out of my face

“But but but both women landed a lot”... yeah that makes it even worse .. all those shots landed and nobody got rocked =pitter patter pillow fisted patty cake fest. Why do people say that fight was good? How can nobody get rocked after so many shots landed? What a garbage fight that was. They say it was good cause so many shots landed. I say it’s nothing but than a display of weak baby wmma punching power, if nobody got hurt after so many shots landed
People absolutely got rocked in that fight bro. Your opinion ain't shit. Did you see Joanna's face?

"Nobody got hurt." Yeah, sure.

Bet you also think the moon is made of cheese.

I think it's just recency-bias for some of these candidates. Though it was a while ago, Zhang vs. Joanna J. was the FOTY, IMO.

Jojo got turned into an alien but nobody ever appeared rocked or wobbled. All those shots zhang landed were academic. Neither fighter ever looked even remotely close to being actually hurt let alone finished... cause of the pillow fists. .. thus the fight was overrated trash. It was a point fight rather than a “go for the kill” fight through and through.

A point fight. . .

You're stone cold crazy.

Yes a point fight or a point fighter... that has been mma terminology for a very very long time. Is this an unheard of concept to you?
WMMA fans are new, they probably didn't use the term in Invicta bc commentators would say it every round

Yes I know what it means. Calling that a point fight is whats crazy

When that many shots landed and nobody comes even remotely close to being hurt let alone knocked down or finished, then a pitter patter point fight is exactly what it was. It is the text book definition of a point fight.

point fighting is not always defined by “trying to win the decision rather than going for a finish.” Sometimes it’s a point fight for reasons beyond your control... such as being a wmma fighter who hits softer than children or any other genetic shortcoming.

You might be trying to get the finish with every swing but it’s still a point fight if you simply have less knockout power than single digit aged fat children

Huh? You're describing more like someone who is called "pillow-fisted" by fans. A point-fighter is usually someone who throws a ton of fast low-risk shots and doesn't commit to power shots much and moves a lot to get away from strikes.

Nothing really sticks out as FOTY for me. Idk why, there were a ton of really good fights but I can't really pick any one in particular. Gathje v. Ferguson would be my pick for sure if it was just a bit more competitive but for the most part Gaethje was dominant.

I enjoyed Fig v. Moreno but I felt like Fig was a bit too careless and the massive kick to the balls kind of takes away from the fight too. I liked Zhang v. JJ a lot too but I do kind of get why some people weren't super into it. At a certain point you could kind of sense that neither were gonna actually get finished and it does take a little bit of suspense and tension out of the fight.

yeah I guess joanna vs zhang was both a point fight and a pillow fist fight... tho it was gonna be a point fight even if they loaded up on every shot because 11 year olds hit harder

This is the opposite argument to the lighter weights suck argument which I've never cared for There are different factors that go into being successful in the different divisions. I enjoy each for their differences. Op was posting that lighter weights captured the most exciting fights this year like it was some abnomoly and I responded that avid fans alway knew this and it was not a suprise to us. It is only to the casual viewer because, like you agreed with me, they want finsihes. They do not want to watch a full 25 or 15 minute technical battle. The lack of finish power and higher technicality over a longer period in lower weights lead to longer wars that are more geared to capturing FOTY awards. This is not me shitting on lower weight class fighters.
Valid points.

So, by your "great" logic, Poirier Vs Hooker wasn't a great fight aswell? Cause Noone was rocked or knocked down on that one.

I'd be extremely surprised if they didn't give it Zhang vs Joanna. Besides being objectively the best fight imo, it's also an excuse to give the award to the women for the first time.

Not that I don't think it deserves to win on it's own merits or anything.

Gotta let go of the word "objectively" in this context, bud. It's purely about preference when it comes to what people think makes a fight great.

No WMMA fight should be considered FOTY.

Cool moment from Figueiredo vs. Moreno.
