Adesanya's TD defense and grappling sucks. Being outweighed isn't a valid excuse when you're fighting the best in the world.

Did he not think to maybe sprawl here? Looks like he just gave up mentally. He's easily broken.

He's supposedly been training jiu jitsu but he looked clueless on his back. Didn't even try to get up. He just let Jan advance position and took punishment.

What Israel should have done:
if Israel was competent on the mat he would have initiated a stand up guard pass by cupping the back of his head and turning his hips. Jan gave him the opportunity and space to do this multiple times.

Adesanya is so bad at grappling. He just let Jan pass to half guard with little resistance. Look at where he's positioned his limbs here.

I agree that he had terrible offensive BJJ and a weak guard, but he was pretty defensively sound on the ground and didn’t take that much damage like you suggest. His problem was his hip strength when that mammoth was on top of him. Izzy couldn’t bridge his hips and get to his side without Jan flattening him to his back again

Watch his fight against wrestler Derek Brunson. Terrible TDD doesn't result in that kind of outcome. Watch his fight with Kelvin Gastelum, if he had no heart then he would've quit on the stool rather than coming out in round 5 and gutting out a decision victory over a guy who was beating the snot out of him and nearly knocked him out.

Jan simply masked his takedowns perfectly there. This is why anyone can take down anyone in MMA, why Alexander Gustafsson was able to take down Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. Your analysis is awful.

And he's not that bad at grappling, he's just not on Jan's level and if you look at their BJJ experience it's obvious why.

Jan is a black belt in Jiu Jitsu and has only been submitted once 14 years ago
Give the guy some fucking credit man. Jan wasn't posturing up to land strikes, he didn't give Izzy any room to get anything going.

Nah he’s great. He just needs more work. Is normal

Sure he is broken, its written on his boobsy chest

I came in here to type some version of this. Great post.

It kinda looked like a mistake a lot of beginners make when trying to escape side control. He kept bridging straight up instead of at an angle.

from a podcast I heard with the main coach of his gym they don’t focus on grappling that much. They mainly focus on just never going to the ground and using the fence to get back up.

I think that’s a great strategy but man it really failed them last night. At his age, I just don’t think Israel will be able to cover up this giant hole in his game.

He actually did okayish defending the clinch and TDs in the early rounds considering the strength disparity and how lethal Jan can be in those situations.
The issue is that Jan made a masterful transition to reactive takedowns and Izzy had no answer for them.

Off his back, yeah, he looked like a fish out of water -- but I wasn't entirely surprised. Hopefully he continues to round that part of his game out, especially if he ever decides to test the waters at 205 again.

To be fair Jans hips and hands were lower than Adesanyas in that takedown. With the timing aswelll, that would’ve been a tough one for anyone to sprawl on.

edit also there was no way Izzy was gonna shrimp out either. He was fucked.

Yeah he should have just stuck to MW and kept destroying all the guys who weigh the same as him

Oh wait, then you sad fucks would have just shit on him for never moving up

Amazing how you used all the wrong gifs related to your "spoilers" (which were incorrectly referenced),
negating Jan completely on both regards.

This is fuckin' amateur hour

And I can't stand Izzy.

Adesanya's grappling is great when he fights smaller dude with shorter limbs.
Izzy is hella athletic.
But when he fights high level grapplers with similar length but bigger and stronger, he gets ragdolled.

He was never going to look good on the ground against Jan, there was nothing to do other than avoid it, those takedowns were well timed, andAdesanta looked a bit tired, not as much as Jan, but he was definitely slowing down too

It’s the weight man, I agree that he won’t be able to close that gap against bigger guys who can hold him down. Last night kinda shut down 205 hopes for Izzy, in my opinion. I still think he dominates 185. Hope he stays back there

Typical shit MMA fan.

Izzy sucks and gives Jan zero credit for timing the takedown and having a solid ground game.

It looks like he’s safe for now mostly strikers in the top 10. Pre Usada Weidman would have give Adyesana serious problems.

If Gilbert or Khamzat decide to go up, Izzy is in trouble. Too bad Usman will never fight him cause I think he would definitely beat him.
