A Sinister fist tutorial:

does this still work with boxing gloves on? You can't really completely close your fist

Yes. The main difference with gloves on (as stated in the video) is the thumb placement. New gloves might be so stiff you can't clench them, but broken-in ones shouldn't be that stiff.

Thanks for taking the time to post this, Sinister. Incidentally, I noticed how Donaire's left knuckle that's been busted up in his recent fights is precisely his index finger knuckle.

As mentioned above, the boxing gloves seem to hinder this proper fist form for me as well. With handwraps & gloves on, I can get the correct bending of the wrist for bone alignment, but when I tighten the fist I feel like the fingers aren't in the right position. Any tips? Would be very much appreciated.

EDIT: nevermind, just saw your reply above. I guess I'll have to try with broken-in gloves.

I meant boxer's knuckle as opposed to boxer's fracture. Fracture is damage to the fifth metacarpal (bone). Boxer's knuckle is bruising or splitting of the extensor hood tendon that runs over the knuckle. The injury more commonly occurs over the first and second knuckle because they are more prominent and thus receive the same extra pressure that gives the punch more bite. While minor boxer's knuckle isn't anything worse than annoying, a more severe injury can be rather crippling.

thanks for posting this Sinister, lately i've been trying to work on landing with the correct knuckles.... This is a big help. Might try doing a few rounds of bag work bare fisted too from now on, seems like a good way to ensure good form if the gloves aren't there to cover up mistakes.

Excellent tutorial on fisting. Some of the subtle things one never really notices.

I remember throwing a hard straight once during sparring and missed. I ripped my thumbnail halfway off.

Very nice. Thanks a ton. Most exciting threadpost since I can remember

I will have to rewatch this vid again some times to let the details soak in, and look forward to doing it. Great, great stuff

I've only had the minor injury.

You dont need to do rounds bare-fisted. Just get some of the small bag gloves. That'll do.

Thanks for the tutorial, I'm kind of confused how I will be able to do my handwraps and have this position of my pointer and middle knuckles slightly forward though.

Recommendation for a good pair of bag gloves? I'd love to have some. Affordable would be nice, of course. Some old school gloves like the old-timers used.

would not recomend them, we were forced to use as kids, they are really to hard, to torture.

Oh, well I don't mean to spar with them. Just for bag training. I've got a good pair of sparring gloves already.

I got some really nice horsehair mitts from [email protected] awhile ago, made by the late Dan Mosby who was taught by his uncle Ray Flores, a prolific glove maker in the 60s in California. Not sure if he has any left or will start making a new line of them soon but might be worth asking.

edit: easier to get would probably be something made by a Thai brand like Twins/Fairtex/Top King etc. Always good quality and not too expensive

If you refers back to my bagworks video, you'd see me use a pair of old school bag mitts made by Twins. Solid pair. I used it without handwrap too. Although someimes it might feel like you are punching with your finger joints than your knuckles.

That also bring me to my question. Sinister, when i hit bag bareknuckle (i do it all the time, btw), i often scrape the skins of my finger's joints, often the middle or the index. With this kind of fist balling, is it gonna relive that problem? Or am i gonna need to learn how to punch better?

Very interesting video, thanks for that, I'm just finishing a 3 DVD set and one of them is on lining up the arm and the knuckles kinetically,I call it the kinetic punch it lines up the arm very similar to you showing two knuckle line up,but the point of impact is the same for every punch uppercut, hook, cross and the forearm is supported behind.it puts about 30% increase of power in the punch compared to a normal boxers punch, personally I don't think you cant throw two knuckle punches in modern fixed thumb gloves,I think the thumbs further forward and they encourage hitting with the weaker outside of the knuckles. theres more info here

as for the fist I hold it very relaxed and loose, I find any tensing or holding tight of the fist also encourages tensing in other parts and slows down the punch.

just my thoughts

Awesome, I wonder how long it will take before I can punch like that without making the conscious effort to align before hand
