Technically light skin is the default. Apes (the family we belong to) have light skin under their fur and there are recent discoveries that show early proto-humans might have originated in Europe and later moved down to Africa during one of the many Ice ages. Melanin is a response to intense UV light, which means it came after "we" lost our fur over 100,000 years. You can find the same thing in quadriped herbivores; the furry ones that ended up in Africa have dark tongues (giraffes for example) but not dark skin underneath. Zebra stripes actually help cool them by creating slight air movement between the light and dark areas when in the sun.and yes white people live in Africa who would have thunk it, nice race bait title..
