437 lbs to 250 - low carb

post x-mas damage report:

11 lbs of what I hope is water weight gained from the 24th to 26th - it's just amazing how rapidly i can gain weight, water or otherwise, when eating carbs.

And I have plans to go out with my aunt and some other family tomorrow so I will probably gain a few more lbs before it's over. Fasting all of today.

Great job mate, the difference is incredible.

On a side note, your 24? You look a lot younger than that!

Yeah - it's what I get for not drinking or doing drugs, ever. I am indeed 24.

Man, I can't get over how successful you've been. I'm very impressed.

How is your physique turning out?

I still wouldn't fuck me, but I am a lot better than what I once was. All my limbs used to be covered in fat, and now while it's still there, it's not obvious. My feet and legs are MUCH thinner than what they once were, no longer have cankles etc.

Still have a lot of work to do!

Finally pissed out my XMAS water weight, and then some, I am at a new low weight by about 1.8 lbs.

I updated my weight chart and have a new topic for today's log.

There seems to be a "Rollercoaster" effect with ketosis - the longer you are in it, the more effective it appears to become. If I skip a cheat meal for a week ill be burning through fat at an insane speed, but eating a decadent cheat meal (my favorite being taco bell) seems to reset all the progression and it starts slow, then builds up again. I.e. following a cheat meal, i'll wake up the next day, find myself 2-4 lbs heavier (water weight), it'll take 2-3 days to get rid of the water weight, then i'll lose .2-.5 lb for a few days, then it'll go up to 1 lb or more, just in time for the next cheat meal.

Another thing I have found is that if i throw in something into my diet which I normally don't eat it, it can sometimes accelerate the weight loss. For instance, for the past three days I have included small amounts (1/5th or so) of green peppers in my omelettes. Not sure why, but it seems to be making me cut quicker. same thing happened with almonds awhile back. It might be caused by a myriad of other factors - but it's a suspicion i have.

I wonder if anyone has ever written on these effects.

1 final note, it feels SO good to be low carb again after 4 days of holiday eating. I can't believe how weak, tired, bloated and generally nauseous I felt on a high carb diet. It took about a week to adjust and now I feel great. I have SO much energy while in ketosis you have no idea - I can literally stay up all night if I want and still go to bed feeling awake.

You should go finish up your post in the weight loss competition. You'll probably win it.

As soon as I head back to school I'll be following you're diet for 14 days just to see how it works for me. I suspect my results will reflect your own. Thanks.

14 days of no carb is just to see how how it works may not be the best idea. You need to do ample research on the subject before diving into such a diet to do it correctly, and be prepared for some of the initial side effects that could and often do last 2-3 weeks. I'm sure Nemesis can vouch for this.

Also, again congrats on the progress. I'm booting up my LC/Paleo diet again today after some holiday binging myself.

Yes, I would not do this diet as a "fad diet" - it's a lifestyle diet. The side effects of converting to ketosis are brutal. Apparently they vary per person, but for me, it was pretty horrible. About a week of nausea, headaches and dizziness followed by another week of the same symptoms, but much more mild. I probably compounded the symptoms but not eating ketogenic properly - i cut out ALL carbs, rather than very low carb. I lost about 20 lbs of water weight during that period lol.

Is it worth it? Hell yes. I feel amazing now, better than I ever have.

Yes, I recently started doing deadlifts, squats, RIP, and other lifts - although not as regularly as I should. Going to up the intensity.

kudos to you, in the past 2 years i went from 205 to 145 so I know the difficulty and lifestyle changes that must be done to lose weight. keep up the good work!

A new update.

Down to 315.

Nutritionally, I have been experimenting with pumpkin seeds as a supplement to my fiber, much recommended for low carbers. They are 100% fiber per carb, pretty much just like flax.

Exercise wise, I have been lifting more, and doing heavier lifts, although it's still not as consistent as I would like. The main impediment is, I won't lift when there's people in the house. Too awkward and I won't lift as heavy. So I basically wait for the house to be empty, then go lift. Just the basics of deadlifting, squatting, calf raises, lunges - stuff like that. The greatest thing I have discovered is zercher squats, which allow me to squat without a squat rack, and without contorting myself into strange postures.

Just finished my graduate degree and need to move out and get a full time job - so that should be an interesting factor in my weight loss quest.

Also added two more pics on the 1st page.

Congrats on the progress!

You are a real inspiration. Usually guys make a few posts and never come back but you have been so consistent with your blogging. I really appreciate you sharing your journey with us.

Keep going bro. Fucking love to see hard work in action.

Down to 312 today and just threw out half of my old clothes and gave the other half away on craigslist. I have nothing that fits now. lol.

Just wanted to say losing weight does come at a cost!

You're about to crack into the 200's? That's pretty fantastic.

Decided to update this log again, as I am planning a highly decadent cheat meal tonight to celebrate my brother's birthday and will probably gain 6 lbs of water weight in the morning. Wanted to update tomorrow or the next day, hopefully at 308/307 - but tonight's meals will set me back at least a week judging from my past history with high carb, high calorie meals.

I am at 309 right now and slowly approaching 300 - can't wait to break through into the 200s, it's sort of the same feeling as breaking through a plateau when lifting.

In recent news I went from a 4x to a 2x - I threw out all my old clothes or gave them away on craigslist and am starting to buy a new wardrobe. I can't tell you how amazing it is to be in "normal" sizes again. 2x is considered the largest size before you go "big and tall" - and the clothing options are greatly expanded now. I don't give a fuck about appearances or clothes, but it does make it easier to buy clothes, and much less expensive.

One thing I find sort of disappointing as I lose weight is that my carb sensitivity is still quite low - virtually the same as when I started. I still gain 2+ lbs of water weight whenever I eat a cheat meal, and that seems to delay my "work" by at least 2 days, sometimes for as much as 4 days. Take for instance last week's cheat meal on Thursday, it was 4 decadent/loaded slices of pizza and I gained 6 lbs of water weight overnight. Just by yesterday did I finish pissing it out. I'm considering reducing cheat meals to one every two weeks rather than 1 every week.

I updated the weight chart on the 1st page, changed line style so it's much more readable and uploaded a new pic. I am also going to figure out how to mark cheat meal days on the chart.
