Colby Covington would be more than happy to take on reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight ace Islam Makhachev in a potential welterweight title bout.

In a recent interview with ESPN MMA's Brett Okamoto, Makhachev shared that while he isn't overlooking his next opponent, he'd like the opportunity to fight for the welterweight strap if he again conquers Charles Oliveira in their rematch at Oct. 21’s UFC 294 pay-per-view.

The Dagestan native believes he's earned the right to challenge for a belt in another division, especially since he afforded UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski the same opportunity at UFC 284.

Moreover, Makhachev expressed his support for Covington as the American gears up to take on Edwards for the title at UFC 296. The 31-year-old believes a matchup with "Chaos" would be a great test of USA wrestling vs. Dagestani wrestling.

If Islam is serious...he should be the backup for Colby/ Edwards since he brought up volk (who backed up Islam vs Olivera) being granted a lightweight title shot....

Ufc did volk a solid giving him a lightweight title shot because he trained for 6 weeks to be a backup for isallm ..plus he had 5 defences.

Common Islam, if you beat Charles ask to Be the back up for Colby Edwards... you would have 7 weeks to train

He also went 1/11 in takedowns against an aging Usman with bad knees.

That said, I think both his and Islam's wrestling will cancel each other out. If it does hit the ground, Islam likely submits him.
Colby is good at staving off shots but has much less experience defending against the variety of TDs Islam employs (trips, throws, body locks, etc).speaking from experience, defending wrestlers and defending judoka/sambists is different. I think that's going to be the biggest issue for Colby. Colby's best chance is to just take the initiative and keep Islam on the defense. Easier said than done tho.

Nobody who’s a serious fan will deny his skills, but he’s gone overboard with his persona and he’s not even good at it. Now he’s calling out lightweights lol? Not a great look.
Honestly.... and I hate to say it. I'm expecting many more to start using the WWE approach to climb the rankings over fighting.
