Seriously, rounds? Since when did people start doing this? "Oh we've always counted rounds!" Yeah fucking right. This was unheard of until a few years ago. Once a fight is decided, the rounds won become irrelevant. This is why a fighter who wins two fights by KO in the last round is better than a fighter who loses two fights he won most of the rounds in. Rounds do not matter. If rounds matter, you might as well buy into the Conor McGregor argument that he's the goat because of all his great finishes. These are phony criteria.

What matters (in no special order):

Wins over losses
Title defenses
Who you beat

That's it.

Jon Jones bless.

Boring thread, didn't need to be made.

GSP is the goat. 2 division champ, all losses brutally avenged, 9 title defences, never pissed hot. Nobody in the history of MMA can say all those things. You fucking idiots.
1. yeah against a blind over the hill bisping.
4. everyone knows he was on something and just didn't get caught. grow up.

If someone catches another guy with a knockout shot or sub, you often cannot say definitively that he would do so again. If someone dominates his opponent for five rounds, you generally have a pretty good idea of what’s likely to happen if they fight again. Velasquez versus Dos Santos is a perfect case in point.

Title defenses are not a good metric for determining GOAT.

Some fighters get title shots after 2-4 fighters whereas others have to win 10 in a row.
Jon Jones was 6-1 in the UFC when he fought Shogun. He still had to win quit a few fights before getting a shot. The only other people that get title shots quickly are champions from other major promotions like Bellator or PFL.

But if you win all your fights against top ranked competition (like title defenses) it speaks to your consistency.

Indeed, but I meant more on a fight by fight basis. To be fair, though, arguing GoAT criteria is just as pointless as arguing over GoAT candidates.

Consistency and longevity are the best indicators. If a fighter can keep winning over a long period of time over top competition then it proves that he's able to keep up with different styles and evolving skill sets.

I can’t say I disagree. Multiple title defenses also show that you were able to continue winning despite everyone in your division studying and game planning for you.
