I think Khabib at his best handles Hughes. A big lightweight of today is probably quite close in size to a welterweight from Hughes’ era. And while we shouldn’t draw too many conclusions from the Penn fights, since BJ’s style of grappling from back then is so unique, it’s worth noting that a quicker grappling ace was able to give Hughes significant problems. I think Khabib would be quicker standing, would have a decent chance to take Hughes down, and even if he couldn’t it wouldn’t surprise me if he could give Hughes problems from his back and in transition.

That’s peak Khabib though. The guy who fought Tibau would have trouble with Hughes for sure.

Khabib would be able to beat him on the feet relatively easily and I wouldn’t be shocked if he found a way to submit Hughes. Whether Khabib could get him down is an interesting one. Khabib is the better overall grappler though.

Hughes is very short. I think the reason most "modern" fighters have an edge over the guys of 2000-2010 is the absurd amount of weight cutting. Guys like Khabib would absolutely dwarf someone like Hughes or Penn. If we compare these guys with nowadays fighters, we should compare them with FWs.

Also Matt with modern MMA training and techniques. I go Matt allowing for that. Just too big for Khabib, there is a reason he starved himself barely making weight.
