2020 Motorsports thread.

There is some talk from Red Bulls Helmut Marko about taking over the Honda engine project. He is saying that he needs F1 to put a full development stop on the engines from the first race in 2022 as they won't be able to afford to develop them. That seems to mean using the same spec engines that are currently in use which certainly won't sit well with Ferrari.

you managed to put two conspiracy theories in one post. not bad.

Not really theories. Hamilton's car was the only Mercedes experiencing engine problems of the cars using it. There were also the pit stop "blunders" that Mercedes made. Even in the year before Nico won the title, Mercedes made several pit decisions that cost Hamilton positions and points. The Monaco Grand Prix was the best example. Hamilton was way out front walking away from the field when a crash brought out a safety car to bunch up the field. Anyone familiar with Formula One racing knew that there wasn't time to pit but Mercedes called Hamilton in to change tires allowing Rosberg and Vettel to pass. They were trying to get Rosberg, a German driver with a German team, the title that year and failed so they did even more the following season including suspect engine failures to make it happen and still only managed a 5 point margin.

Kyle Larson files for reinstatement
of course, let him race.
although having Tony Stewart supporting you might be detrimental

Formula One is cutting out the two Friday practice session this week and doing a single practice session and qualifying on Saturday with the race on Sunday. NASCAR hasn't had any practice sessions or qualifying and just runs the race. It seems to benefit the front running teams who already have a good idea how their cars handle. The slower teams don't get time to try different setups.

Is that for this weekend in Portugal? Or in Italy? I am looking at the sched and seems like tomorrow fp 1 and 2 are a go?

It looks like it's for Italy as there are practices scheduled for Friday. They talked like it was for the next race but they must have meant the next race in Italy which only shows a Saturday practice.

Cool. Yeah. I like watching the practices. I enjoy the few times they don’t have a commentary and you can here the cars. I think there was technical difficulties with the commentary, but still.

Pirelli testing an unknown compound today with no markings. Not sure if that is normal. Never really noticed all these years watching practice.

Fp2. Stroll was ahead and max tried to pass on the racing line it seemed. Let’s see what stewards say if anything.

Most drivers seemed to struggle on the new tires. Are they gonna be using them for qualifying/race?

It has been done before but the teams were doing everything they could to get out of running them. The whole thing was pretty screwed up as all of the cars had to go out for the first 30 minutes and the track was too crowded to get a decent test. The test tires seemed to grain rather quickly.

The stewards will let it go. Verstappen thought Stroll had completed his lap and would be slowing. They said they were running a two fast lap stint with Stroll but who knows. The stewards can listen to the team radios which might tell them if that was true. Stroll's team claimed that Stroll didn't know Verstappen was there. The in car camera seemed to show that but it doesn't show what the driver sees in the mirror.

The tires in the first half hour of practice two were being tested for next year. The compounds that they will use for the race weren't doing well either as cars were spinning out and the tires other than the hard compound were degrading rapidly. I think each team used one of the two sets of hard tires that they get for the weekend in the first practice session. The last hour of the second session had many drivers fast laps cut short by cautions and stoppages as so many cars were sliding off the track. Hamilton was one of the cars caught out twice on his attempts.

Could be big problems at Portugal as the cover on a drain came up and damaged Vettel's car late in practice 3. They only have 2 hours to get ready for qualifying. Not enough time to fasten them all down as they say there are a lot of them around the track.

It appears that Mercedes is saving the medium tires for qualifying as they haven't run on them yet when other teams have. This might be a two stop race and almost certainly will be for cars starting on the soft tires. There are likely to be safety cars from cars running off and getting stuck in gravel traps so two stops might not be bad if they have tires available which could be why Mercedes hasn't used any medium tires yet.

Qualifying delayed by 30’mins to fix above mentioned drain covers. Hopefully there are no issues during qualifying. It wasn’t an issue in Q1. Russell put in a good lap to make it into Q2, knocking out Kimi.
