2020 Motorsports thread.

Several little "big ones" so far at Talladega. Kyle Busch is running without a left front fender after getting some air. His brother Kurt got even more airtime and is out but in the next round because of his win last week.

Honda may return for the electric era. The Honda president said they’re ending their formula one participation to focus on going full electric in their vehicles by 2030. But yeah, it’s going to be strange transition in racing for sure.

Somebody tried to get Honda into Formula E but they declined. Electric car racing has to be fairly short races because of battery capacity. The "racing" is more about power conservation than having the fastest car. Formula One is somewhat that way as they are restricted to 105 kilograms of fuel and are required to have enough fuel at the end of the race to test it. The teams that can harvest more electrical energy can use that for the extra power which seems to be the advantage Mercedes has.

Demolition derby as they will try a third time for a green, white, checkered finish.

Practice in Germany was fogged out this morning. The ceiling didn't get high enough to allow the medical helicopter to fly and medical facilities are too far away to rely on a ground ambulance. It looks like more of the same tomorrow but it might be sunny for the race Sunday.

The IMSA cars aren't doing any better in the wet than the Xfinity cars did on the Roval at Charlotte. One of the GTLM Porches crashed out in the first couple of laps and another crashed a few laps later. Both out of the race in less than 15 minutes. Crashes almost every lap.

Bottas beats Hamilton to pole. Max very close to the mercs. Should be a close race. Stroll got sick and they called in Hulkenberg in short notice. He didn’t make it out of Q3.

It was a very interesting qualifying session. Hulkenberg will start 20th as he was the slowest in the first session. Both Hamilton and Bottas made their first runs in Q2 on the medium tires. Hamilton was fast enough to get through to Q3 with his first run but Bottas was in danger of being eliminated. They sent both Bottas and Hamilton out on the soft tires. Bottas improved his time and Hamilton was also faster but I expected him to slow so he could start on the medium tire but he ran faster on the softs so he will start on them. Maybe because it is expected to be cooler for the race. They have to run the medium tire at some point and I thought it would be better to start on it to make a long first run and if an early safety car comes out as it is likely to, they could change to soft tires and run the rest of the race on soft tires. It also seemed like a better team strategy to split the tire compounds between the two cars and save a set of soft tires.

I expect all of the teams turned in their hard tires after the first two practice sessions were canceled because it is expected to be too cold to run them. Mercedes ran medium and soft tires in the only practice session and I think Hamilton ran one set for most of the session.

It could rain for the race and tire choices won't make any difference.

Ralph, you are always so much better at providing updates! I was also confused as to why Hamilton didn’t start on mediums. I guess he figures, let others gamble and not the world champ leader.
Another storyline is that ham has the chance to tie Schumachers record win total in Germany. That must be a ton of pressure. Let’s see how Lewis handles it.

Looks like it will be a dry race so we will see how the tire strategy works out. Turn one should be interesting.

Terrible day for Bottas. First the lockup then a power unit failure.

Now Albon has a problem and they retire the car so Mercedes and Honda having problems.

91 Wins for Lewis. Unreal. A record once thought untouchable. Does it in Germany with Mick Schumacher watching on also. That safety car at the end made things interesting.
