So GSP ducks Anderson Silva and Middlweight for years but now that Bipsing is champion, he's all of the sudden willing to move up and cut everyone who is far deserving in line? Fuck you. I hope he gets annihilated.
Georges St-Pierre on the Anderson fight....

October 2008

"A lot of people have been challenging me so far. I have a lot of friends at 185. To tell you the truth, I’m not afraid of challenging nobody at 185. I’m very confident in myself. I think I can do pretty well [against Silva]. I think I’m a different fighter than all the guys who have fought him in the past. There’s only one way to find out. - MMA Weekly

April 2009
"I would have to sit down and see what the opportunity is. How long I have for the fight. Because if I fight at 185, if I do it, I want to do it well. I want to put some extra muscle on me, some extra weight. I would have to go on a I would have to go on a diet for a couple extra weeks, and it would take me some extra time, but I'm always excited for a new challenge. - Sports Illustrated

July 2009 - Post-fight interview with Joe Rogan at UFC 100
"My division is pretty stacked, so I don't know. Everybody asks me that question. It's a question of timing. I walk around 185 pounds. I'm not that big for a welterweight. If I do its for a challenge. But I'll have to take the time to gain weight and take care of business."

November 2009
"I'm not afraid of any man in the sport." - Bloody Elbow

April 2010
"If he dropped to 170 pounds, probably.
There is another thing to consider: If I move up, maybe I won't be able to come back down to defend my (welterweight) title. So it's a big decision to take. It would be the biggest fight in UFC history, probably. It would be interesting. - MMA Junkie

August 2012
"It could happen of course," he said. "It definitely can happen, but for me, that's far ahead in time. Right now, I'm not thinking about that. I can't. My main thing right now is to get better, and then when I'm going to fight, to get ready to win the fight, what I need to do to win and beat the guy. I need to focus on one thing at a time. - MMA Fighting

November 2012 (after defeating Carlos Condit)
"On top of that, he weighs 234 pounds; I weigh 188. So there's a big weight difference. I've fought guys who were bigger -- I'm not scared of him -- it's just that I will take this fight when it makes sense for me. I just came back from an injury, there's money to be made, there are fights in my weight class, other challenges out there, and if I fight him, I will have to gain weight, while he will have to lose weight, and then afterwards, I won't be able to come back to my weight class.

First and foremost, I have things to do at 170 pounds. When I am ready and when I want the fight, that's when it will happen. - Tout le Monde en Parle

March 2014 (After his announced hiatus, relinquishing of welterweight title)
"There were conversations before but they were talking about me going up at 185. I weigh 190 pounds, the guy weighs 230 pounds when he is off season. I'm 190 pounds off season. Right now I'm 195 at maximum. My friends saw him and he is now 230, 235. I know people who know him. He is very big. It's not a fair fight for me. Before, Anderson Silva was in my size when he used to fight in Japan but he is very big now. They were talking also that he was going to come in my division when I was the champion and I would have no choice. But me going up and after I fight go back down...I can't play with my weight. I can't come back and fight for the title or in a superfight. It has to respect my conditions, I all ask is a fair fight. Right now I need to take some time off. But if they have an offer with something good, maybe. - ESPN Brazil

Why he's not defending the WW belt. He can take this fight at a comfortable weight and drop down after this without taking a "hit" win or lose. They have to pay him for dropping Under Armor, I'm told that was 20 million dollars.

because the only time he was ever willing to challenge for the MW belt was when one of the weakest MW champs in ufc history holds it.

It shows his reluctance had everything to do with not wanting to fight anderson as opposed to not wanting to fight at MW. There was a time when GSP had cleared out his division. There was no good challenger available. It would have been the perfect time to do him vs Silva.

WTF? Bisping keeps on ducking legit contenders. I hope GSP will jab him to win a boring 50-45 just for lols.

Also I don't care about this fight at all. Pointless match up.

Can't wait to see Soldier of God Yoel Romero destroy GSP back to retirement. It will be a vicious beating.

Sigh. Two joke defenses in a row, now that mw is finally stacked. I'm a gsp fan, but this fight is ridiculous. I miss the days of champs fighting the top contender, without all the ducking in the name of money fights.

it's not surprising and it's a smart business move on GSP: Anderson was on a terror run; Bisping is an underdog that can upset you (nothing to lose sleep over).

Less risk, same or similar reward.

No shit. Anyone can see that plainly. Anyone who follows this sport can now also see his reluctance to fight at MW had everything to do with Silva despite what he said over the years. Which does not look good.

I'm sure the casuals won't care though, so the points kind of moot.

If you really wanted good polling you should have added a "Who gives a shit?" option

I'm actually shocked although I guess I shouldn't be. After this long being inactive and just getting an immediate shot ?
Huge GSP fan but C'mon.

This too.

Then I root for double KO. Fuck them both.

The million plus who will buy the ppv. Including I'd imagine many hypocrites in this thread.

If they're giving GSP the middleweight shot why the hell is Maia taking the Masvidal fight? He should have sat out. Unless there is a rematch clause should Woodley lose or Mcgregor is getting that 170 shot when he comes back.

Do Maia, Yoel and Jacare have a lawsuit on their hands? GSP has never fought at MW and gets an immediate title shit while these guys are fighting their ass off and can't get a shot. There has to be some kind of meritocracy in place or they should be able to walk away from their contracts. Complete absurd. I hate GSP more than ever now.

No, because their contracts don't stipulate they're guaranteed a title shot at a certain point. It sucks, but the days of title shots being based on merit are over. Blame Conor, he paved he way for this kind of bullshit.

All they can do is fight out their contract and leave if they don't like it. If you're not a huge draw the ufc gives zero fucks about what you want.

Terrible fight, should never have been made.

How does anyone think GSP wins this?

Yeah but it would be nice to actually know the opinions, instead of guessing, and since there conveniently is a polling thread right infront of us, would it really be that much to ask for a 3rd option?

Bisping gets his money fight. Congrats. I hope gsp wins but i really dont give a fk.

Well, that's certainly unfair to the real contenders at MW.. though I can't say I have much sympathy for the likes of Cheatin' Yoel. Is GSP gonna get a drug exemption too? because there's a reason he quit around the same time USADA was coming in.. he isn't natty.
I should report you for the steroid accusation but that's not as much fun as just outright calling you an idiot. He left well before USADA, engaged in his own WADA certified testing and came out clean and still beat Hendricks who hid from testing. And I say you're an idiot because it takes 2 seconds to verify he's getting no exemption; it will be at least 3 more months for the fight while he undergoes testing. When he gets through clean and still beats Bisping I hope you remember this dumb-fuckery.

they're just going for the easy money as usual. this is just a bad idea, what if GSP wins? I doubt many people would give him good odds against any of the rest of the top 5 at MW, maybe even top 10. the size is going to be a huge issue.

This is terrible. It's not even that good of a match up.

I dunno what to say about the UFC anymore. Belts and rankings have pretty much lost relevance
