2016 Raiders Warship Where The Hell Will They End Up Thread

Apparently the Steelers followed most of my Mock Draft picks for the Raiders:

Artie Burns, Javon Hargrave and Jerald Hawkins

Smart franchise

He could be a good compliment to Murray, quick footed type runner. His blocking needs work but that can be said for quite a bit of backs.

He also had an ACL injury his freshman year. Jesus. It's the ACL DRAFT

Seriously though, he also need to work on his fumble issues.

Yea i was keeping an eye on Haeg too. Good pick up for the Colts. They need him more.

Vadal Alexander, Solid pickup. I read a comparison the other day to Gabe Jackson.

14. Karl Joseph - B

From a talent standpoint, this was a great pick. Joseph is great in coverage and a savage in his hitting/tackling ability.

While I feel that Reggie reached to get him (believed he would have fallen to the 2nd and could have selected other players at his position in later rounds), safety was a need and the Raiders filled it with this pick. Significant injury last season a concern going forward (why I felt he would have fallen to later rounds).

44. Jihad Ward - C+

As I originally stated, a pretty meh pick here. Del Rio says he can play right away while others say that he is a "potential upside/project player." I willing to agree with the latter. I feel that Reggie also reached here considering there were better players at this position still available in later rounds. Also an injury a concern as it was learned that some teams felt that he needed knee surgery.

However, he is versatile: can play DT and DE. Also he has has nice size for a D-lineman. Should be good asset for the Raider's front line.

75. Shilique Calhoun - B+

My favorite (and unexpected) pick of the Raider's draft. Excellent pass rusher. Impressed by his performance against Iowa in the Big Ten Championship.

Room for improvement along the lines of his agression and discipline but is going to be awesome for our defensive line

100. Conor Cook - D+

Jury is still out on this pick given there are one of many ways to interpret Reggie's mindset and motivations. For one, there is talk that McGloin might not be available after next season so Reggie is trying to prepare for Carr's future backup. However, why would Reggie pick this guy? He's not very impressive and his potential seems limited. Strikes me more as a game manager type of QB and that's where I think his ceiling is at. I also think he could be used as a future trade asset or the Raiders are simply sticking it to Jerry Jones for spearheading the effort to block the Raider's move to LA.

What pisses me off the most though is that the Raiders gave up two picks to trade up and get him. Fuck that really pisses me off.

143. DeAndre Washington - B-

Reggie filled another need here at running back. Should compliment Lativus decently in the run game. Small for his position but powerful and fast. Needs to work on his fumble issues and another mild injury concern moving forward. Sustained an ACL injury his freshman year but has bounced back from it (so I won't break Reggie's balls with this line of criticism).

194. Corey James - F

Seriously, what the fuck was this pick all about? This guy was projected as an undrafted free agent and rightfully so. Extremely unimpressive on film and I really don't see a high ceiling in his potential development. If this was a depth pick then it was a pretty shitty one especially since vastly superior Travis Feeney was still available (drafted at #220). Sure Travis Feeney sustained numerous shoulder injuries during his college career but that doesn't seem to be a concern with other players drafted this year.

234. Vadal Alexander - B-

Nice depth signing at offensive guard. Project player with nice potential. Awesome size and strength for is position. Needs significant development.

Overall Draft - C

I'm not going to mince words. I really thought the draft for the Raiders this year was underwhelming. I felt we reached a lot for players that could have been selected in later rounds, opting choosing projects and upside and those with injury concerns. I feel that Reggie is satisified in placing his full trust with the current roster to continue to develop and improve. With that being said, there is still a lot of undrafted talent available to make further strides. I hope these new players work out (especially Corey James (haha)) and I'm looking forward to this upcoming season.

My opinion so far-

Karl Joseph-Outstanding. We got a sideline-to-sideline hammer with coverage skills. The non-contact knee injury isn't particularly concerning, players recover from that injury well consistently. I also don't buy into the idea that we took him too early. When the player you want is on the board when you're up you take him. A player's pre-draft valuation is not an exact science. I think sooner than later we'll be watching Joseph snag INTs and crush ball-carriers and be saying "damn I'm glad we drafted that motherfucker".

Jihad Ward-Ok so we get a "trust me" pick here. I like the guy's measureables, versatility, and that he's described as a high-motor player. What I don't like is drafting on potential. I guess I'll just have to take a deep breath and have some faith in Reggie that after 2 great drafts in a row he's not throwing a gutter-ball on this one.

Shilique Calhoun-High motor, high production, high character...BAM. Honestly it looks like the last 2 picks should be reversed but whatever. It looks like this guy should be a productive situational pass-rusher immediately. Good pick.

So, I say Reggie went 2 for 3 at worst. I'm as skeptical as anyone about Ward but let's try to follow Pliny's advice and not be negative about this.o_O

My thoughts exactly.

Yea pretty meh draft as a whole, with Joseph and Calhoun as highlights for sure. Hated the Ward pick, what a waste with Alabama DTs, Mack Alexander and Cravens all still available.

Cook was a real head scratcher. Cory James pick was trash. Washington pick was meh. I did like the Vadal Alexander pick to close it out.

Max McCaffrey Ed's son, just signed as an udfa after Elway tried to get him to Denver lol.

List of signed UDFA per Vic Tafur:

OL Denver Kirkland (Ark) - ?
WR Johnny Holton (Cin) - ? / weight room needed
DE James Cowser (So. Utah) - ?
WR Max McCaffrey (Duke) - Meh - weight room needed
TE Ryan O'Malley (Penn) - Very intriguing. A bully in the blocking department
DL Darius Latham (Indiana) - Needs work
WR KJ Brent (Wake Forest) - ?
WR Marvin Hall (Wash) - He looks promising
OL Terran Vaughn (SFA) - ?

The Ford linebackers highlight tape was fantastic but he's smallish. Looks like a good player though. McCaffrey brothers teaming up next year would be the tits. Fuck denver.

Irvins twitter is a gold mine this past week lol.

Good article for those that hate the Cook pick

What do you mean the Oakland Raiders traded up?

They traded up and grabbed a quarterback??

I’m so confused.

This was my exact train of thought Saturday morning. Jihad Ward was unexpected and following him with Shilique Calhoun was doubling down on the unexpected. Or so we thought. As it turns out, those two moves were nothing more than appetizers for Reggie McKenzie’s entree of the unexpected: Connor Cook.

It took me a little while to rebound from the shock of what was going on. It wasn’t a move that made me upset, it was a move that confused me. I know it’s a total Ron Wolf move. They do it in Green Bay all of the time and the team who has drafted the most quarterbacks in recent years is actually the New England Patriots.

But are the Raiders at the point where they can afford to take players who don’t address any need in the immediate future?

And that’s when I realized that yes, that Raiders have reached a different level. No, they aren’t at the level of the Patriots or Packers yet but they also are no longer at the level of the Browns or the 49ers. The Raiders are now a good team but one that still has needs. Now is exactly the time to start thinking about the future.

Too often, teams wait until the last minute and suddenly a once great franchise is struggling to rebuild. It happened to the Raiders team that got too old after the Super Bowl, it’s happening to the Ravens right now, and it happens to every team who doesn’t constantly stock pile the best talent that they can find.

That’s how good teams like the Packers and Patriots spend a year or two reloading rather than five or more years rebuilding. They take the best players they can find and give themselves both excellent depth and the ability to shed cap space with younger players or make trade to fill needs by using younger players.
