Trump's vacuousness was apparent from the very beginning. He got the most attention when he mentioned the wall, which anyone with more than a handful of brain cells knew was pure demagoguery and not a serious proposal. Then he upped the ante with the Muslim ban.

Empty promises and emotion (anger, rage, retaliation) is exactly what got him the nomination.

Of course the latter is what got him the nomination.

For all the talk about crooked media - he got off the hook for his idiotic policies since so little of political discourse is about actual policy any more. The Republican debates were essentially two topics - ISIS and guns. Whole thing was pathetic compared to Clinton vs. Sanders where debates centered around actual policy.
