I figured sturridge and rooney up top, lallana and welbeck on the wings, gerrard and henderson in the middle.

Yes, but usually in a more forward role on the flanks. Plus who would you have had on the other wing, Welbeck? Rooney?. both of those only play wide in an advanced role, not in a traditional 4 man midfield.

You're right, it actually looks similar to the 4-2-3-1 Wenger uses for Arsenal. I'm not sure about using Rooney in that central attacking midfield role. He doesn't like to come deep for the ball so it seems like there's a huge gap between the central mids and Rooney. Wilshere or Barkley would probably do better in that role imo.
