20 years since Tito-Shamrock 1

What a classic fight this was. It reminds us that when we look back at the best moments in the UFC it doesn't always have to do with the fight itself, but rather the hype/excitement/feelings we had leading up to it.

That doesn’t sound right, I don’t remember ppvs getting anywhere near those number of buys back then.
He copied and pasted the wrong event. UFC 40 was 150k buys which was about 3x what they were normally doing.

The 775k he posted was 4 years later when Tito rematched shamrock but they were the middle fight on that card

I think Dana has rewritten history several times over but for all of the legend of "Forrest and Bonnar saved teh UFC", this show was the lifeline that even got them to the Spike era. And the Tito-Shammy build is the archetype to this day of how Dana tries to do his PPV main event builds.

Seriously, 200-300k max would be my guess.

It was the first event where I actually heard radio adverts for.

Some people aren't aware of how niche MMA used to be.

Oh how I miss those years.
I use to have to rent them on vhs then eventually dvd, months to over a year after the event took place. PPV Canada banned it for awhile so you couldn't get it on ppv..

I remember how excited I use to get when the video store got a ''new'' event in. I miss those days too..

I've got a funny video store story.

It was I want to say 1999 (I would've been 10)
I was living in Germany on an American Base.
I wanted to rent the UFC tapes as I'd just seen my first couple events.

So I convince my parents to rent them for me.
I couldn't find them in the store so I asked the clerk.
The guy at the counter was super taken aback, looked shocked.

He denies me and says I don't think your parents want you watching that stuff. I'm bummed
My mom comes up and asks him for the tape after I tell her. I convinced her it was basically pro wrestling.

The guy is eventually like allllllll righhhhht. Fine.

He heads to the 18+ porn area past the beads and come back with UFC 2.

<Dany07>Hilarious..

They had it in the sports section here. It got to the point, I had the video store clerk personally calling me anytime they got a new event in..

MMA had a very ''forbidden'' aura about it back then. Which made it exciting to watch..

I really like the ease of ESPN plus for watching recent PPVs and all that but it just doesn't compare to the used section of Blockbuster.

Super fond memories of getting all of the original VHS run for like $2 a piece. I think the last SEG one they released was Tito vs Frank Shamrock? Good times.

It was also the first fight I saw when it happened-ish. I saw it on some expanded cable channel like a month after the ppv
