The 1st one is the pure, good shit. Empire is a great add on, but that's where it started to devolve into family soap opera and the entire shindig began to free fall. I grew up a yuge fan of the series, but the bigger the brand grows, the more I realize... I just like the original one.
I can see why some would as there is a clear shift towards drama after the first film, granted there is some drama in that film as well but its also more deliberately pulpy and a lot of the interactions are more witty banter. For all the talk of Lucas being a bad actors director I do actually think that is a lot of the reason for the films success(the same as American Graffiti) was the banter between Han and Leia especially appealing to people who most likely didn't care much about sci fi/fantasy otherwise.
I thought it might have been mostly nostalgia... almost everyone loves those three first movies... but almost everyone who does was a kid when they saw them too.
While the rest of them were varying degrees of terrible, but if you watched them as a kid they're most likely awesome.
Really though if you look at the kind of demographic who are most likely to be hardcore starwars fans I wouldn't say it actually lines up with just being nostalgia for a fad. People who would have gotten caught up with that hype as children/teens when the originals originally came out would now be in there 50's and early 60's yet I would say your classic starwars fan age is more someone like Mike Stoklasa from Red Letter Media at 41(same as me). I have vague memories of seeing Jedi at the cinema age 5-6 but really my attachment to the films developed much more in the late 80's and early 90's via VHS/TV.
It seems odd now I spose but I actually felt Starwars in that period was almost cultish, a bit like Star Trek in the 70's were by it didn't really have much mainstream presence but was getting picked up on by a lot of kids.
