1989: The Abyss vs Leviathan vs DeepStar Six

I like the abyss and leviathan. Off/ on topic. Wasnt there a made for tv movie in the 90s about a giant octopus? Not like a silly syfy one but a good one.

Excellent thread.

My vote goes to Deepstar Six.

I rented that so many times that year.

Was it DeepStar 6 where the guy goes into an escape pod, shoots up too fast, and pops?

The Abyss was like a Disney version of a sci-fi Alien movie. The climatic ending was dumb as hell.
They should have called it Sea Monkey's instead, because that's exactly what the aliens looked like.
Just a bunch of goofy lookin' Sea Monkey's you bought when you were a kid.
Hay kidz memba dis?

Yup, killing Bob Morton out of Robocop in the process.

Yes!!
Couldn't remember for certain.

But he starts bleeding and then the camera pans back looking at the escape pods little window and then blood just splatters on it.

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I thought the water alien thing (the cylindrical water thingy) got some praise for it.

That scene was PROPERLY dark. Morton goes nuts, doesn't wait to decompress properly, says "F*ck it", then hits the eject button. And you instantly know it doesn't end well for him.

No, this is what the alien really looked like.

The Abyss.

I haven't seen DeepStar Six, so I can't really pick between all three of them - but I think The Abyss was much better than Leviathan. The Abyss is a solid story, the ending was perfect IMO.

I felt Leviathan was mostly just another bland monster movie or whatever, so my vote goes to The Abyss, very memorable story and Ed Harris put on a great performance. I never really see him get much credit for anything but he's a damn good actor, very underrated, at least it seems that way 'cause I've never once seen anybody talk about him or any of his movies, he always puts on a good performance.

The Abyss was a cool movie, classic Cameron. For people the ending was polarizing, you either liked it or hated it.

Anyone remember Deep Rising with Treat Williams? :)
