to make it in a world level , ie olympics? a friend of mine is starting up judo, he hasnt mentioned any sort of aspirations yet, but do u think 16/17 is too old to start if someone wants to go to the olympics in 8-10 years?

no perfect age i would maybe start at 12 or 13

kids that young dont get scared to get thrown

no, but it's the perfect age to start a thread though..

The question is how bad do you want it?

Are you willing to sacrifice all the usual teenage bullshit to train your ass off, get your ass kicked on a regular basis and go to sleep sore and tired more often than not?

If you said yes to the above than maybe you can make it.

yes, i would say 16 or 17 is too old to make it to the olympics.

can you pay the fees without bothering mommy or daddy..! you know you kids nowadays.. the entitlement generation..

Maybe in a country that has a top notch judo team, but in the US....? We're not exactly Japan.

There's also other factors besides age. You just might not be good enough to make it, even if you do train your ass off.

Well im not really sure of the process to get to the olympics(like the trials and etc.) but from what my judo teacher made it seem, most of olympians are not only naturally talented, but they have been training since they were very young(like 6 and stuff).....

and when you start training at a young age, you just become a different animal....then combine that with hard work and natural talent, and forget about it.

again, i see many judokas in the olympics who are like around 20 or early 20s anyway, so i just dont realistically see how someone who starts training at 17 can compete with them at that level.

There are exceptions ofcourse, rhadi furgeson comes to mind, but i dont know when he started judo.

either way, to the TS, if your friend is not even training yet, why in the world is he thinking about the olympics? judo is fun as hell, and he should start it....then worry about the olympics later.

Are you kidding? 16 is YOUNG. Just get in there and get started. You'll be fine.

Listen, your chances of making the Olympics are lousy even if you are a great athlete, born into a family of great athletes, start young and have great coaching.

That being said, 16 is definitely not too early to start, learn a lot, have fun and compete seriously.

And hell, IF he makes the Olympics it will be a great story. And if he doesn't..., he'll still know how to throw people on their head and then choke them unconscious and that is cool whether he makes the Olympics or not!

16 would be old if you wanted to start playing hockey. Most NHL players started around 5.

I think it would be tough to become a gold medal gymnast if you started at 16.

Is it possible that age is not that important in grappling arts?

I'm 41 and am looking to start Judo. Is that too old? Don't answer that. ...lol

16, old? Unless you did a ukemi roll outta your mama's cooch when you were born, you're too old.

All jokes aside, you're never too old to do judo. And why are you thinking about the Olympics? Worry about getting through the nationals first...
