1 - 5 and headlining a UFC card

BJ is a legend though while Gas is not. But youre right BJ shouldnt have been headlining nor even fighting. I still rooted for the guy though, but instead only got tippy toes for it.

BJ spent the last part of his career battling drug addiction. He used fight camps to help him sober up. I wouldn’t be surprised if we found out that Dana gave him fights to help him clean up.

I still think the worst headline was a middleweight fight between welterweight Nate Marquardt and light heavyweight James Te-Huna.

Nate was returning to 185 after a 3 fight losing streak at WW. He had 3 wins in his last 8 fights, with his 2 most recent losses being back to back 1st round KO's.

James Te-Huna was moving down after a 2 fight losing streak to reinvigorate his career. He had been submitted by Glover and just got knocked out by Shogun (who was fresh from being submitted by Sonnen, so it wasn't great times), both in the first round

Two guys off losing streaks with their last 4 combined fights being first round losses, 2 divisions away from each other, meeting in the middle to try and restart themselves. Only Te-Huna had a rank at #14 (but again, that was at LHW, and this was a MW fight).
Te-Huna would lose this fight, then extend his losing streak to 4 against Bosse before retiring. Marquardt was probably less lucky for winning, as he needed to fight 8 more times, winning only twice, before announcing he was done.... then fighting 2 more times after that anyway.

Louis Smolka vs Paddy "the original Paddy" Holohan also headlined a card.

At least Nate was a former contender who headlined cards.

GOATstelum

Also Conor headlines cards and his record isnt that much better.

It really is weird how undisciplined Gastelum is for a professional athlete, who obviously has a crazy competitive spirit in him.

Really don't get it, he should be able to make 170 easy as well if he started dedicating himself more to the craft, but seems like the burritos are more important than his career.

Its a shame he struggles so much to put the burritos down. I like Mexican food alot too but you gotta avoid it sometimes Tamales, Tacos, Burritos, Molé, Enchiladas are high in calories. Most Mexican food has alot of carbs/fat too.

His weight is the only thing holding back his career imo.

If he could just lay off the Mexican food during camp he could be a serious contender at 170

I don't think it is as uncommon as OP is making it out to be.

Several fighters have fought for titles coming of back to back losses.

Joanna only won 2 of her last 7 fights and 5 of those 7 were still title fights.

Chuck headlined ufc 115 while 1-4 in his last 4, including 3 lights out KO losses. Then he headlined Chuck vs Tito 3, eight years later.

BJ headlined vs Yair with one win in his prior 7 fights.
Chuck is a legit MMA legend though

Louis Smolka vs Paddy "the original Paddy" Holohan also headlined a card.

At least Nate was a former contender who headlined cards.
After the main and comain fell apart, yeah. It was so unplanned as the main that it was 3 rounds

Gastelum is there to put the old guys out of their misery, to send them off into retirement. That's why he still has a steady job in the UFC.

The last time Gastelum fought someone ‘old’ was Jacare in 2018. You could claim that Bisping and Tim Kennedy were also ‘old guy’ wins - Bisping had just lost the mw belt to GSP and Kennedy was Gastelum’s first fight at mw. That’s three fights. Meanwhile Gastelum’s last three fights have been again Cannonier, Whittaker and Heinisch, and he’s now going to fight Imavov.

What the fuck are you talking about?

It could be a favor from the company since he took on Whittaker and Cannonier on super short notice and the latter was very close. I believe he should try moving back down to welterweight.

I think it's over for Kelvin, too old, too much damage, too much time has passed and his game hasn't evolved at all. If he somehow magically found discipline in his diet and vision within his pursuit I think it would still be too late. It's sad, I had 24 year old Kelvin winning that decision vs Woodley in 2015. I also think if Kelvin stayed at 170lbs and trained seriously and took his diet and conditioning seriously, he'd have chewed up guys like Usman and Colby. One of the biggest wasted talents in UFC history despite still soaring to decent heights.

I like Kelvin and think he’s a guy that still hasn’t met his potential and probably never will. But yeah, he shouldn’t be headlining and he shouldn’t be fighting Imavov. He should be taking a step down and fighting somebody outside of the rankings. Somebody like Buckley, Bruno Silva, or Hawes.
I think the UFC is giving him the same treatment that they gave Johny Hendricks : Hendricks was fighting in wrong weight class, had multiple weight issues, and so UFC gave him Paulo Costa as a final "Yeah? have fun with that bro" send off..............

Gastelum has next to NO CHANCE against Imavov. it's basically a fight to showcase Imavov.
Gastelum has wasted YEARS in UFC being a chubby dude and fighting at 185lbs when he should have been at 170lbs but his crappy mexican diet and refusal to eat clean and quit the carbs and stay LEAN has resulted in him losing 5 of his last 6 fights.

It's a damn shame, I like Gastelum but he has put his stomach ahead of his fight career for far too long and this is what he gets.

Gastelum has won 1 of his past 6 fights, and lost his past 2 fights. This losing streak is not that uncommon, the fact that he is headlining an UFC card, is unprecedented. No other fighter has headlined a card with a streak like this. He has won 3 of his past 10 fights. Name recognition, Mexican fan base, exciting style, Sherdogish hairline....why???
I don't think it is that hard to understand.
Yes, he's been losing, but he is fighting top guys, and guys that are much bigger than him (since he was banished from his WC).
His style is exciting and he got name recognition. Whether he wins or loses, it is invariably a good fight, and the winner is deemed a solid top fighter (him or his opponent).
It's not just about winning, but a combination of all the above, with the objective to bring viewership, and Kelvin always bring it.

This is kind of how Smie'n Alvey was not kicked out of the UFC. Winning record is only a determining factor if you are not exciting.

Has had some good knockouts, Mexican fanbase, and put on a hell of a fight with Izzy (yes I know that happened over 3 years ago). Best reasons I can come up with. It's a fair question

If you don't like it, leave
I'd imagine these are the words your poor mother utters to you on a daily basis but yet you stick around like a barnical on a boat demanding that your next Costco size bag of Cheettos be tossed down to you in your dark damp basement. Does she lower them down in a basket with a rope?
