Gastelum has won 1 of his past 6 fights, and lost his past 2 fights. This losing streak is not that uncommon, the fact that he is headlining an UFC card, is unprecedented. No other fighter has headlined a card with a streak like this. He has won 3 of his past 10 fights. Name recognition, Mexican fan base, exciting style, Sherdogish hairline....why???

I like Kelvin and think he’s a guy that still hasn’t met his potential and probably never will. But yeah, he shouldn’t be headlining and he shouldn’t be fighting Imavov. He should be taking a step down and fighting somebody outside of the rankings. Somebody like Buckley, Bruno Silva, or Hawes.

It could be a favor from the company since he took on Whittaker and Cannonier on super short notice and the latter was very close. I believe he should try moving back down to welterweight.

I still think the worst headline was a middleweight fight between welterweight Nate Marquardt and light heavyweight James Te-Huna.

Nate was returning to 185 after a 3 fight losing streak at WW. He had 3 wins in his last 8 fights, with his 2 most recent losses being back to back 1st round KO's.

James Te-Huna was moving down after a 2 fight losing streak to reinvigorate his career. He had been submitted by Glover and just got knocked out by Shogun (who was fresh from being submitted by Sonnen, so it wasn't great times), both in the first round

Two guys off losing streaks with their last 4 combined fights being first round losses, 2 divisions away from each other, meeting in the middle to try and restart themselves. Only Te-Huna had a rank at #14 (but again, that was at LHW, and this was a MW fight).
Te-Huna would lose this fight, then extend his losing streak to 4 against Bosse before retiring. Marquardt was probably less lucky for winning, as he needed to fight 8 more times, winning only twice, before announcing he was done.... then fighting 2 more times after that anyway.

I think Shavkat Vs Neal should have been the headliner but in retrospect it's lucky he wasn't.
I was fully prepared for this to be another one of those threads where the headliner is canceled, and a shitty backup becomes the main and people complain about it, but no, Gas vs Imavov was actually the planned main event. Crazy

Feels like they're just using what little name value he has left to fill some space on one of the year's early cards. If he loses, I bet he'll start falling down the cards from here on out.

Gastelum is there to put the old guys out of their misery, to send them off into retirement. That's why he still has a steady job in the UFC.

I don't think it is as uncommon as OP is making it out to be.

Several fighters have fought for titles coming of back to back losses.

Joanna only won 2 of her last 7 fights and 5 of those 7 were still title fights.

Chuck headlined ufc 115 while 1-4 in his last 4, including 3 lights out KO losses. Then he headlined Chuck vs Tito 3, eight years later.

BJ headlined vs Yair with one win in his prior 7 fights.
