who gave wanderlei his black belt?

I disagree, Chael is actually a very one dimensional grappler.

Wanderlei simply had no offense on his back, and couldn't shrimp to save his life. He was stuck..
Nah, chaels a decent grappler. He used to have shitty sub d, but his wrestling and passing/top control is strong. Watch his metamoris match, passing anderson to mount, controlling bisping... etc. He's certainly put more into his bjj in the last few years. It's not 'incredible' but its good overall

Breaking!!

TS is considering demoting Wanderlei Silva's BJJ belt status

Wand is getting older, had a four year lay-off, trained like a demon his whole career (How about YOU try to hang with brutal Chute Boxe trainers?), and is feeling the cumulative effects of lots of striking damage and Horsemeat from his heyday.

No surprises there.

Every Brazilian has a black-belt by default, it seems. Some of them are quite obviously not of black-belt standard and Wanderlei is definitely one of them, he's extremely basic on the ground and always has been.

There's only one black belt in UFC. Maia.

the only thing worse than Wanderlei's tdd yesterday evening was Sonnen's post fight speech

Being a black belt doesn't mean much. It just shows a commitment to the art. It doesn't mean you can compete in BJJ. Wand is a legit black belt. I bet he could roll with plenty of black belts who work in crappy gyms and are fat and out of shape. Wand couldn't compete with Maia or at ADCC. There is a difference.

I don't believe ANY fighter who seldom goes to the ground is professional competition BJJ black belt. That is why I questioned if Jose Aldo was even a black belt BJJ. I hardly see him on the ground.

If you don't use it, you lose it.

It's well known nova unaio give black belts out early, especially to MMA...

Hell a lot of Brazilian fighter (who obviously aren't ground specialists) get there bb early too... just for hype

The last guy might just be a black guy, not a black belt.

The whole of Chute Box went to McDonald's one day and they didn't have enough money to buy the adult meals, so y'all can guess what they had for lunch...

just curious who gave wanderlei his black belt. it's hard to believe he's a "black belt":. I've watched wanderlei fight his whole career, but I've never seen any bjj skills beyond purple belt level.

Let me axe you this; when was the last time he was submitted?

They've just awarded a blue belt his black after 8 months

There are levels of black belt, and if you are not consistently working on your skills they decay over time.

Some black belts definitely mean more than others, Ive seen his entire career as well and I'm just not buying that he was ever black belt good on the ground. Even times when he was in position to fall back on his jiu jitsu, he's looked very basic and out of place. I put Vitor in this same category, though at least he knows how to look for subs on the ground.
