Trump threatens real-socialism nation Venezuela: 'I'm not going to rule out a military option'

Trump is digging himself into a hole. Sooner or later he's going to have to back up his boasts.

Venezuela and North Korea are not worth fighting for.

Restoring a functional democracy to working status is always worth fighting force.

This isnt a country that has never experienced democracy, it had a pretty functional one for decades until the communists took over.

Trump gets his three inch woody every time he threatens war now. He feels like a tough guy for once in his life.

He's acting like the Oprah Christmas special - but except instead of giving away cars it's

"A war for you, a war for you, and a war for you! Everybody is getting a WAAAAAAR!"

For most of the times the US was actually fighting against democrats in order to establish autocrats to protect American corporations and/or because they believed a democratic country would lean to the communists.

Maduro has effectively voted him a dictator at this point, that certainly requires international action.
I'm not sticking up for the guy.

If the populations had a will towards democracy, we would have seen signs of it by now.

You cannot fight someone else's fight. We have seen this again and again in America's misadventures. Artificial democracies will collapse, and be replaced with new regimes.

Right, how much of a will for a democracy did the people in eastern europe had when the communists marched into their midst?

And in which American misadventures did they tried to establish democracy?

So trump threatened nothing. We do have plans for Venezuela.....and every other country. So this is les than nothing to worry about. Probably needs its own thread

It’s fine for Trump to say that all options are open with regard to Venezuela. But going out of his way to threaten military intervention isn’t particularly useful – Maduro has been utilizing the supposed prospect of American intervention in Venezuela as a bugaboo in order to rally support for his horrifying regime. Furthermore, there’s no evidence that the United States has considered seriously any military action in Venezuela to this point.

He just did Maduro a huge favor for reasons you mention - anybody working against him is working for Trump. Also isn't Maduro in deep with the Rosnef?

Why? Sabre rattling is a time honored tradition in politics. It can go on indefinitely.

And that was a pretty soft rattle.

America's sabre-rattling has traditionally ended up with a military operation somewhere as the President and his regime attempts to deflect attention away from domestic affairs.

If this was a regime that had seen 50 years of peace, sure, but as we know, America has not truly seen one year of peace in the last century or so.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. North Korea sabre rattling has been going on for ages. Same with Iran, and all sorts of places. Not much happens (directly, anyways).

Venezuela I'd say is less likely, and I have a hard time even putting what Trump said in the same ballpark. If there was going to be military aggression we'll be seeing a ramp up of propaganda in order to manufacture consent.

Nice picture although I personally prefer the unedited Ben Garrison cartoons

Yes, I saw that this picture somehow ended up on my HD but I didn't want to post it because it has slightly antisemitic undertones. Apparently, some nerds at /pol edited McCain's head on Mr Garrison's cartoon so I used their version instead.

Once we blow the fuck out of North Korea then we can see what all these other shitty countries do.

South Vietnam was a notorious failure.

In USSR, we are talking about a Communist regime on an entirely different scale to the Venezuelan socialist regime.

In Eastern European countries, "dissenters" had their eyes and genitals gouged out, and their bodies put up for display for their relatives to see, by the USSR regime. Even then, resistance remained throughout the decades, although mostly under-ground.

In Venezuela, what's stopping the people from revolting? The moment the regime's hand is forced and they begin suppressing dissent, the "international community" can conveniently step in, and back the "democratic" rebels over the government. But if there is no rebellion, there can be no revolution.

And as we have seen in insurrections like the Syrian Civil War, there may not be any legitimate democratic will on either side, whether it be government or the rebels.

I see the recent aggressive stance as America evaluating the options, one shitty regime at a time, like a kid in a candy shop.

Sooner or later they will strike, that is known. You do not keep the world's most expensive army idle for too long.

South Vietnam was a notorious failure.

South Vietnam was never a democracy, it was a series of military dictatorships after the US plot to have Diem assassinated.

In USSR, we are talking about a Communist regime on an entirely different scale to the Venezuelan socialist regime.

For the moment.

In Eastern European countries, "dissenters" had their eyes and genitals gouged out, and their bodies put up for display for their relatives to see, by the USSR regime. Even then, resistance remained throughout the decades, although mostly under-ground.

Resistance was meaningless it collapsed on its own.

But if there is no rebellion, there can be no revolution.

The fact that government controls the distribution of food, medicine and the such is probably the reason why they dont revolt at a large scale.

The second was that there were democratic elections lined for 2018 so people had hope to oust him through democratic means.

Meanwhile the government keeps stocking the guns and food for itself all with cooperation from Cuba.

And as we have seen in insurrections like the Syrian Civil War, there may not be any legitimate democratic will on either side, whether it be government or the rebels.

Again, Syria was never a democracy.

Trump has Mattis as SecDef and needed a congressional waiver to get him in there, has McMaster as his NSA and now Kelly as his COS - he surrounded himself with military. Kelly and McMaster greatly control the information Trump sees daily. McMasters controls all the intel he is getting and Kelly controls any and all personal access to the President.
