The Death of Heavyweight MMA

MMA may be biggest in America but the biggest hotbed of talent is definitely Eastern Europe. The region dominates the Olympics in wrestling, boxing and Judo - as well as combat sambo. They've also historically already had some of the most dominant HWs in MMA and other fight sports (Igor V, Fedor, Karelin, Klitschko Bros, etc).

It would be nice to see the UFC sign some of the HWs from those areas. Outside of the obvious Minakov and Ivanov duo, I would like to see them pick up Goltsov (despite him coming off a bad loss), Pavlovich, Mokhnatkin, and maybe Zelimkhan Umiev.

Even kickboxers like Daniel Ghita would have worked, like they are doing with Saki at LHW now.

Don’t forget Volkov and Struve

Pride was a phony yakushi influenced steroid induced farce full of People who should have been 205ers. They only seemed good because they were only facing other undersized heavyweeights and japanese cans. All the top pride heavyweights were around the 220-230ish pound range who should have been 205ers and they all got murked once they faced true Heavyweights. What was fedor's best pride win.... Cro cop and nog? Mirko was an utter fail once he started facing actual heavyweights. Nog is also a small 230ish pound heavyweight who got outsized and destroyed against true heavyweights. Literally all the top pride heavyweights were small heavyweights and some of them were even roid induced blown up middleweights such as kevin randleman and even Josh barnet's 250ish pounds also turned out to be roid induced phoniness as he shrunk down to the 230s once the usada pressure started heating up but caved in anyway and went back on the juice n set the record for most high profile drug test fails ever.

Pride was more entertaining than it was skillful. Heavyweight was just as trash in pride during that era as it was in the US.

You're simply a fuckwit. Stick to your UFC you dumb fuck!

Bellator has a fair share of entertaining HW's, really hurts UFC's depth with Hunt, Lewis, Cain, Rothwell, JDS and well Stipe not fighting

Again there's just way too much money in boxing for the UFC to compete, the money still isn't going the right places in MMA unfortunately.

These former Eastern Block countries also have huge amateur boxing programs with vast amounts of money and resources pumped into them. You've only got to look at boxing at the last Olympics where these countries dominated the medal tables. MMA just can't compete with that.

Spoken like a true noob, who relies on fightfinder to write material.

Go back to the WWE forums.

Lol, Eastern European HWs are a myth. They are the most juiced out and roided athletes in existence. They make the Brazilians look like saints. If they did fight in the UFC, they would end up deflated and weak after getting off the sauce, or not being able to fight at all due to numerous failed drug test.

Most of the boxing medals won at the last Olympic were by Eastern European/former Soviet Block fighters. Five out of the eight medals at Heavyweight and Super Heavyweight were won by boxers from Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Croatia. With a Brit, a Frenchman and a Cuban winning the other three.

These guys are subject to stringent drug testing and none of them failed. I guess the UFC prefers highly skilled natties like Brock Lesnar and Overeem lol.

What the hell are you talking about? Lesnar and Overeem were both busted. Overeem was a moron so he failed before USADA was even implemented. Lesnar failed his one and only fight under USADA supervision.

As for your comment about stringent drug testing in the Olympics......LOL. No other group of people have failed more drug tests in international sporting competition than the Eastern Europeans.

Russia was almost banned entirely from the 2016 Olympics for state sponsored doping. The entire Bulgarian weightlifting team was banned from participating. The list of eastern european athletes who failed their drug test is nearly inexhaustible. Mind you Olympic testing is a complete joke compared to the year round random drug testing employed by the USADA.

It's a lot better than the LHW division.

This looks like the right moment for Big Brown to make his come back to knock out highlight reels all over the UFC!

Haha, you are a true idiot.

Division is definitely thin at the moment... can't argue that.

What confuses me is that Stipe has smashed Werdum, Reem, Arlovski, Hunt and JDS, is in his prime, is American and fights fires when not beating people up....and apparently he isn't drawing much money.

He's defended his title a few times and apparently has cleaned out the division because his next fight will probably be a Werdum rematch. Werdum may be old but he's definitely still a threat and it should be a good fight if he doesn't serve Stipe his chin on a silver platter this time.

Still, we're doing rematches already. That's not good. If Black beast beat Mark Hunt he would probably have fought for the title next. If Cain's bones weren't made of glass he would probably come back to a title shot after like a year and a half off.

We need new blood for sure.

Amir Aliakbari, an olympic caliber wrestler got ko'd by Mirko in Rizin and he barely won old Heath Herring. That just feels so wrong.

This is why they badly need to make DC - Stipe (Jones would have been even better). That way Stipe would get the exposure he deserves, winner of that fight would be a big news and become a huge star.

Our savior has arrived and he's going to murk Arlovski into retirement

Even kickboxers like Daniel Ghita would have worked, like they are doing with Saki at LHW now.

The problem was I suspect the UFC was much less willing to offer good money quickly, Crocop and Hunt went directly into big shows for their MMA debuts were as Saki is the first time that's happened(well not his actual debut but might as well be).

The ironic thing is though Kickboxing today is much weaker financially than it was during the Pride era, in the UFC had been flashing the cash I think they could have gotten most of the best Glory HW and LHW fighters in recent years.
