Yeah. Right now a practice squad NFL player gets $7,200/week. They also get free meals at the facility, training, medical care and equipment. Granted, some get bumped to the active roster here and there. Thing is, after 2 years on the practice squad they lose eligibility. Plenty of guys wash out at that point. Some might not want to get a real job yet.

You can offer free training and a monthly stipend if you are the UFC. If a couple guys are keepers it is worth it.

They only seemed good because they were only facing other undersized heavyweeights and japanese cans. All the top pride heavyweights were around the 220-230ish pound range who should have been 205ers and they all got murked once they faced true Heavyweights. What was fedor's best pride win.... Cro cop and nog? Mirko was an utter fail once he started facing actual heavyweights. Nog is also a small 230ish pound heavyweight who got outsized and destroyed against true heavyweights. Literally all the top pride heavyweights were small heavyweights and some of them were even roid induced blown up middleweights such as kevin randleman and even Josh barnet's 250ish pounds also turned out to be roid induced phoniness as he shrunk down to the 230s once the usada pressure started heating up but caved in anyway and went back on the juice n set the record for most high profile drug test fails ever.

Pride was more entertaining than it was skillful. Heavyweight was just as trash in pride during that era as it was in the US.

The reason HW is so poor is because most of the top HW's in the past were basically LHW's that didn't want to drop some weight. Coleman, Fedor, Crocop, Nog, Igor, Sergei etc. aren't really big guys in this day most of them would go 205 at the start of their carrers, i mean most of them are around 1.9m tall and weighing in at around 100kg.

I think the pool of giant athletic guys is small already and they have a lot of options for their careers, its hard to get them to do MMA. The talent obviously isn't coming, just look at the top 10. Guys are in there that were fighting when i started watching MMA, more than 10 years ago.

Where are all the Olympic wrestlers like Coleman and Couture? Where are the high level black belts like Werdum and Noguiera? The high level sambo guys like Fedor, Igor and Minakov? The kickboxers like Crocop, Hunt and Overeem?

Nobody is crossing over into HW MMA anymore at all.

This all day. People comparing Sylvia ruled UFC HW don't get it. That was never HW in its entrety, as obviously Pride was where most elite HWs were at.

The Russian orgs have some. Minakov, Pavlovich, Goltsov, Umiev, Shtyrkov (USADA would kill him) , Mokhnatkin and a few others. A few other younger guys with potential.

KSW HW is a mess now too. Bedorf lost his title to Fernando Rodrigues Jr who then got knocked out by a 7-4 39 year old nobody in 16 seconds. So not much potential there either.

Lol, Eastern European HWs are a myth. They are the most juiced out and roided athletes in existence. They make the Brazilians look like saints. If they did fight in the UFC, they would end up deflated and weak after getting off the sauce, or not being able to fight at all due to numerous failed drug test.

Are you talking about Eastern European HWs or American HWs.

Amir Aliakbari, an olympic caliber wrestler got ko'd by Mirko in Rizin and he barely won old Heath Herring. That just feels so wrong.

To be fair, Aliakbari pounded the piss out of Herring.

Herring is just one of the toughest mofos to ever fight MMA. In terms of best MMA chins, Herring is right up there with the Hunts and Nelsons. In 42 fights he was never ever knocked out cold, despite being absolutely mauled by some savages over the years.
