There's a company out there called Mars One that is planning to put private citizens on Mars by April 22, 2023. The controversy is Mars One is a marketing company.
They are going to be sending someone on a one way mission to live on Mars and die. They already have plans to select participants like a reality tv show, the people decide who goes. Everything is going to be filmed like a reality tv show, even the stuff on Mars.
    There's more here:

So what do you guys think on this?

"Step right up and prove why you should get a one-way ticket to Mars! Well, wait -- you might want to know a little more about the venture first.

A Dutch company called Mars One began looking Monday for volunteer astronauts to fly to Mars. Departure for the Red Planet is scheduled for 2022, landing seven months later in 2023.

The space travelers will return ... never. They will finish out their lives on Mars, representatives from the nonprofit said.

"It's likely that there will be a crematorium," said CEO Bas Lansdorp. "It's up to the people on Mars to decide what to do with their dead."

Still, the company said it has received more than 10,000 e-mails from interested would-be spacefarers."

Sherdog had better send a representative. Who will step up to the plate?

^ Now that's smart marketing. Actually 2 guys and 3 girls could get very interesting. IF you're gonna have to look at someone for the rest of your lives, they better be one hell of a looker. Why not do this on the moon first, I wonder?

I suppose there will be a lot of applications from people who plan on being terminally depressed in a decade?

What sort of time dilation is happening for such a trip? How fast can our ships go? I'd imagine the effect would be small since our ships are slow, right?

I just don't like the thought of taking a spacetrip that is like 2 weeks for me, but my whole family has lived their lives and died in those two weeks. It would be the saddest 2 weeks ever.

What a ripoff - it costs $38 to apply to be a Mars astronaut.

Insignificant. The effects of drinking your own urine and terrible boredom would more than overcome any dilation.
