I agree the UFC coddled him to keep the gravy train running. Throwing in Conor versus Aldo was a no brained since Aldo was champ and in losing to a champ, there is no shame.

The UFC never thought Nate would rock and choke Conor. And even in the rematch, Conor clearly won, but took many shot and had to literally run away to secure a decision otherwise his fatigue would have caused him to get TKO'ed again - For sure.

That said, the strikers in the UFC are not high level. Hi level are old-school K1 guys like Ernesto Hoost or Peter Aerts, Thai Stadium champions, top-ten boxers from the WBC or IBF, these guys are top strikers and lack the TDD to show what real striking looks like.

Frankie Edgar has decent striking but is undersized, same with Aldo. But neither are elite strikers, only elite MMA fighters.

I would love to have seen a prime Mike Bernardo who can sprawl or Bernard Hopkins who can sprawl and shake off takedowns.

16 fights to 10 fights and 3 years age difference. Marginal skill and experience difference at best.
 
It's really hard to choose between these three guys.

Marcus Brimage, great striker
Amazing record of 6-6 and he KOed another the legend Jumabieke Tuerxun

Dennis Siver, another amazing striker
Great record of 23-11 and he is 5 ft 6 in. He's basically two times bigger than Conor.

Diego Brandao, great, great striker
Amazing record of 22-11, he fought in the best competitions like Kok, Rie, Casino, Amazon.
 
I'm a huge fan of both Diaz brothers but those listing Nate seem to forget the guy is a human punching bag and has sloppy boxing. He wins with an accumulation of punching and having a granite chin, but there isn't much about his striking that is technical. He wins by toughness, willpower and tremendous cardio.

Aldo is the best striker but charged at him like a boxing 101 student who got excited about learning about a left hook (and forgot about basic defense and boxing strategy). I was really annoyed because I wanted to see a war.

Holloway is a talented striker but was green when they fought. A rematch would be fantastic. Every other guy McGregor fought was not close to his striking ability and/or his size. The only one who had a path to win was Mendes (who gassed), Diaz (obviously) and maybe Aldo. Everyone else was badly outmatched.
 
Nate was good enough to be an Andre Ward sparring partner.

That doesn't mean that much. He could have been good enough to give Ward work but no where close to pushing him. I'd love to see that sparring.

I know. They've both come a long way since then and I think it would be a great fight to make today.

Conor is probably done after tomorrow, but one can hope!
