Disney's MOANA Scores Huge $82M While RULES DON'T APPLY Bombs with $2.2M

24bum2u.jpg

In another huge win for animated films — and Disney — Moana scored one of the best five-day Thanksgiving showings of all time with $81.1 million from 3,875 theaters, enough to conquer holdover Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which placed No. 2 in its second outing with $65.8 million from 4,144 theaters for a domestic total of $156.2 million.

If the $81.1 million domestic estimate holds, Moana will boast the No. 2 Thanksgiving launch of all time behind fellow Disney title Frozen ($93.6 million), not accounting for inflation. (Currently, Toy Story 2 is No. 2 with $80.1 million). Among all films, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire remains the five-day Thanksgiving record holder with $109.9 million.

Moana has everything going for it: glowing reviews; an A CinemaScore; Dwayne Johnson, who voices a demigod enlisted by a fierce young Polynesian princess; and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music with Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina. Newcomer Auli'i Cravalho voices the title character.

Disney scored a second victory over Thanksgiving as Doctor Strange crossed $616 million globally, including a third-place finish domestically with a five-day gross of $18.9 million.

At the other end of the spectrum, Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply bombed with a five-day gross of $2.2 million from 2,382 theaters, one of the worst starts ever for a title going out in more than 2,000 theaters.

Rules Don't Apply is Beatty's ode to old Hollywood and tells the story of a young woman (Lily Collins) and man (Alden Ehrenreich) who work for Howard Hughes. In addition to directing, Beatty plays Hughes in his first feature role since 2001's Town & Country.

Broad Green Pictures and Miramax's raunchy black comedy Bad Santa 2 also made a poor showing. The $26 million film — once again starring Billy Bob Thornton as the ultimate anti-holiday hero, Willie Soke — hoped to debut in the mid-teen millions, but instead posted a five-day opening of just $9 million to place No. 7.

Robert Zemeckis' World War II spy thriller Allied fared the best after Moana, but even it disappointed after failing to win over many critics and earning a B CinemaScore. The Paramount film, starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, opened to $18 million from 3,160 theaters over the five days. Allied, which cost $85 million to make, placed No. 4.

Tom Holland Joins Doug Liman's Post-Apocalyptic Thriller CHAOS WALKING

Tom-Holland-600x200-Dragonlord.jpg

Tom Holland, who is playing Spider-Man in next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, is in negotiations to join Daisy Ridley in Lionsgate’s post-apocalyptic thriller Chaos Walking.

Doug Liman is directing the project, an adaptation of the best-selling YA novel by Patrick Ness.

The story takes place in a world where all women have been killed by a germ and all living creatures can hear one another's thoughts in a stream of images, words and sounds called Noise.

Holland would star as a boy forced to flee his town with his loyal dog and who comes upon a strange sight: a girl (Ridley).

Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) worked on the script, as did Jamie Linden (Money Monster).

Holland made his feature debut with the 2012 tsunami drama The Impossible and made a splashy superhero debut as Peter Parker in this year’s Captain America: Civil War. Earlier this month, he signed on for a key role opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon in the period drama The Current War.

Lin-Manuel Miranda has set his next project with Lionsgate's The Kingkiller Chronicle. The Hamilton creator is partnering withauthor Pat Rothfuss to serve as the creative producer on the adaptations of the best-selling book trilogy.

Miranda, who did original music for Disney's latest animated feature, Moana, will also lead musical development on the project, and is expected to compose and write original songs.

"Pat Rothfuss' Kingkiller books are among the most read and re-read in our home. It's a world you want to spend lifetimes in, as his many fans will attest. Pat also writes about the act of making music more beautifully than any novelist I've ever read," said the Tony-winner in a statement.

Kingkiller chronicles the life and times of Kvothe, a magically gifted young man and famous musician who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen.

Lionsgate has a multipronged plan on adapting the epic fantasy book, simultaneously developing movies and a a premium quality drama series, the latter of which will expand on the world outside of the books.

Lindsey Beer, one of the writers working on Transformers 5, has been tapped to adapt the first book in the series, The Name of the Wind, for the big screen.

I'm really curious about how they're going to handle this.

The main story is told through a framing device of Kvothe telling his life story to a Chronicler. And throughout the framing device, a ton of hints are dropped that Kvothe is being an unreliable narrator.

How is that going to gel with the events depicted in the TV series? Is it not going to cover the same time period? And if it does, how are they going to avoid confirming or contradicting the most fanciful aspects of Kvothe's narration?

Rob Letterman to Direct Pokemon Movie DETECTIVE PIKACHU

Rob-Letterman-Pokemon-Dragonlord.jpg

Goosebumps director Rob Letterman is ready to catch 'em all. The filmmaker has been tapped to helm Legendary's Pokemon movie Detective Pikachu.

The live-action film from Legendary and The Pokemon Company is being written by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch. The first pic in a planned franchise centers on Detective Pikachu, a new character and story in the Pokemon universe (the character was first introduced in a video game in Japan).

Legendary has fast-tracked the project for a production start in 2017 after nabbing the rights to the iconic Japanese property in July on the heels of the Pokemon Go craze. Universal will handle distribution of the film outside Japan, as it has done with Legendary’s other projects. The Pokemon Company's longtime movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan.

Letterman seems a good fit for the property, as he's worked in both animation and live-action and with familiar fantasy-skewing properties like Goosebumps. His previous work includes Monsters vs. Aliens and Goosebumps, both of which he directed, as well as Shark Tale, which he wrote and helmed.

Joaquin Phoenix, Gus Van Sant Reteam for John Callahan Biopic

Gus Van Sant’s long-brewing biopic of quadriplegic cartoonist John Callahan is coming back to life.

Joaquin Phoenix is attached to star in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, an adaptation of Callahan’s memoir. Steve Golin is producing via Anonymous Content, as is Iconoclast Films.

Callahan became an alcoholic at the age of 12, a drug abuser in his mid-teens and a quadriplegic at 21 after being involved in a car accident after a day of drinking. He managed to rebuild his life to become an envelope-pushing cartoonist, learning to use both hands to draw, for example, and also reconciling with members of his family.

Van Sant, Callahan’s fellow Portlander, was attached to direct the project in the early 2000s before it fell by the wayside. Callahan died in 2010.

If the project comes together smoothly, it will mark Van Sant and Phoenix’s first reteaming since the actor’s breakout in 1995’s To Die For.

Justice-Smith-Jurassic-World-Dragonlord.jpg

Justice Smith, the star of Baz Lurhmann’s The Get Down, has joined Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s next Jurassic World film.

J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls) is directing the project, which is in preproduction as it heads toward a spring start in England.

Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World, is writing the script with Derek Connolly. Details are being kept buried deep underground. Variety reports Smith will be playing a young scientist in the movie.

Smith led the cast of Lurhmann’s stylish The Get Down, which followed a group of teens in 1970s Bronx. He played Ezekiel on the Netflix show. The actor also appeared in Paper Towns, Fox 2000’s adaptation of a John Green YA novel that starred Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne.

Rodney Rothman To Write and Direct 21 JUMP STREET Spinoff

10249743_ori.jpg

Sony Pictures is setting Rodney Rothman to script, with an eye toward directing,a 21 Jump Street spinoff movie where the main cops are female. Neal Moritz is producing.

This concept has been floated for a while, along with a separate film that will be a mash-up with 21 Jump Street stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum colliding with the hit Sony franchise Men in Black. That project remains in development.

There’s still no word yet on whether this 21 Jump Street spinoff project will follow new characters or will instead turn the spotlight to the existing team of the barely-named undercover officers Fugazy and Jr. Jr. They were played by Dakota Johnson and Rye Rye in the 2012 original.

Rothman has turned in the latest draft of that film, and he co-wrote 22 Jump Street, the $50 million-budgeted sequel that grossed $331 million worldwide. His other writing credits include Grudge Match and Get Him to the Greek. It is early days on this, and insiders said there are male characters in this latest version of what started as the 1987-91 Fox drama series

Amy Schumer to Star in Sony's Live-Action BARBIE Movie

Amy Schumer will star in Sony’s live-action Barbie movie. Mattel and producers Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, and Amy Pascal have teamed up for the project, which will try to take a contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity.

A year ago, Sony hired three scribes to pen separate screenplays with the studio picking Hilary Winston’s idea and script with which to work off. It is expected that Schumer will rewrite the script with her sister, Kim Caramele. A search for a director is also underway.

The feature, with Schumer in the lead, will try to address those in a story that begins in a perfect land of Barbies where one woman slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn’t fit it. She is expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset.

The studio is hoping to make an imaginative family comedy with plenty of heart, using the Tom Hanks classics Splash and Big, as well as Disney’s more recent Enchanted, which starred Amy Adams, as touchstones.

Schumer’s casting is sure to raise eyebrows. One, it goes against the classic image of Barbie being a thin beauty that has come under fire in recent times, which is precisely the point of this casting. And two, Schumer has cultivated a brand of saucy comedy that can clash with Mattel’s pristine image of a gal who has unlimited career options.
