New MATRIX Movie May Be About Young Morpheus Starring Michael B. Jordan

There's been a lot of chatter this week regarding Warner Bros.' upcoming return to The Matrix franchise. A reboot was announced (with Michael B. Jordan being pursued as the lead), fans got worked up about it (as they are wont to do) and Zak Penn (the guy writing the treatment) hopped on Twitter to make sure everyone knew it wasn't a reboot.

And that's true: WB is not interested in rebooting The Matrix, but rather in exploring expanded universe concepts. And according to two independent sources for Birth.Movies.Death, one idea that's gained a lot of support is a prequel film starring Michael B. Jordan as a young Morpheus.

The site believes is that a Morpheus film has long been a concept favored by the folks at Warner Bros. The studio has established a writer's room (a sure-fire sign that WB is gunning for multiple films/franchises), and their further understanding is that this Morpheus idea is one of several being kicked around.

And I've taken the liberty of turning the poster upside down so you can clearly see Matthew McConaughey's Man in Black.

Rumor: Sony's Sci-Fi Thriller LIFE Might Be a VENOM Prequel in Disguise

Is Sony’s Columbia Pictures puling one of the biggest coups in the history of cinema?

Bloody Disgusting just unloaded all of its webbing at this new fan theory that’s too good to be true, yet is surprisingly believable.

Is Life, in theaters March 24th, a prequel to the long gestured Spider-Man spinoff, Venom?!

The first piece of evidence is pretty simple; all three films/franchises are released through Columbia Pictures, not just Sony.

The second clue is that on March 16, out of the blue, Venom was given an official release date of October 5, 2018, meaning there must be secret progress behind closed doors in order to get production underway for that targeted date.

Another bit of information is that Sony contacted Bloody Disgusting directly wanting it known that Alex Kurtzman (The Mummy) was no longer attached to direct Venom.

Here’s where we start getting into the Spider-Man tie-in…

The recent trailer for Life carries the exact same shot from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. The villain in the 2007 sequel? Eddie Brock (Venom), played by Topher Grace!

    (From Spider-Man 3)

    (From Life)

Nearly the same footage from a 2007 movie is in a trailer for the 2017 Life. What does it mean? Could Life truly be a Venom origin story? Why not? Shared universes are all the rage now, and what a cool way to re-introduce the character, setting up a quasi-remake for next year.

FilmSchoolRejects recaps it perfectly: “See, in the comics and the movie, Venom isn’t a humanoid, it’s an alien symbiote that attaches itself to a humanoid and takes them over. Looking back on the Life trailer, said goo from Mars does appear to be some kind of adhesive symbiote capable of starting small and spreading man-sized, and the inclusion of a single crowd shot — on Earth — would seem to indicate our crew isn’t successful in destroying it.”

The site also notes that what really gives this theory legs are Reese and Wernick, the writers, who do have Marvel connections via Deadpool, and Sony, the studio behind Spider-Man 3, Life, and Venom.

With studio’s pulling the rug out from under fans being all the rage – The Woods, Split, Cloverfield – it wouldn’t be surprising in the least if this fan theory ended up being true.

LIFE Writers and Director Won't Rule Out VENOM Prequel Rumors

Both Life writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, along with director Daniel Espinosa, are reluctant to admit that Life has no ties to Venom, though the possibility of the creatives just having some fun with a fan theory remains. ComicBook.com caught up with the trio behind Life at a press event for the film and posed the question directly.

"Yes, the answer is yes!" Wernick said in a joking manner. "We are tied to Venom! We are the prequel to Venom!"

Reese was quick to point out the reasoning behind the theory. "One is that we wrote a Venom screen play, so I think people saw that connection," Reese said. "They also saw the Spider-Man 3 footage that sneaked its way into our last trailer." None of it rules out a connection. "They just announced a Venom movie release date just yesterday."

Wernick chimed back in, saying, "All of the sudden, someone's out there going, 'Bing! Lightbulb!'"

While the writers' tone was one of a joking manner, they never distinctly ruled out the possibility. In fact, when asked if they're of the belief that Life would make a great prequel to a Venom film, Reese agrees, saying, "It would, wouldn't it?"

"That's the symbiote!" Wernick says of the alien life form in Life. "Eddie Brock's on Earth. The symbiote's on Earth, finds Eddie Brock..."

They're practically already writing the connection.

"He realizes he can hide on the inside of a human," Reese said of the alien.

Whether or not Life is, in fact, the first R-rated tie-in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe which now houses Spider-Man, is left ambiguous for now. To form your own decision on whether or not there is a chance Life launched the Venom film as a secret prequel, you'll have to see Life in theaters when it releases on March 24.

    Is this a good thing?

Legend was really mediocre if memory serves.

I actually can't remember any of the movie, I just remember being really bored.

Robert Downey Jr. to Star in THE VOYAGE OF DOCTOR DOLITTLE

Robert Downey Jr. will star in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, based on the character from the 1920s series of children’s books by Hugh Lofting. Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Gold) will direct the film based on a script he wrote, with an earlier draft by Tom Shepherd.

In a competitive situation, Universal won the rights to the hot package after it hit town and garnered multiple bids from studios last week.

Doctor Dolittle first hit the bit screen in the 1967 movie Doctor Dolittle, directed by Richard Fleischer and written by Leslie Bricusse based on the Lofting novels The Story of Doctor Dolittle, The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle and Doctor Dolittle's Circus. The story follows the eccentric Doctor John Dolittle, a former physician who lives with and treats animals, claiming that he can communicate with them.

The film, which starred Rex Harrison and was a musical, was not well received at the time, but was nominated for an Oscar for best picture and won for best original song and visual effects. Another Dr. Dolittle pic was released in 1998 and starred Eddie Murphy in the titular role. The Fox film was a success and resulted in four sequels, although several went direct-to-video.

Gaghan won an Oscar for writing Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic. He also wrote and directed Syriana, and most recently penned and helmed Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey.

When I think of movies clamoring for a reboot/re-imaging, Dr. Dolittle isn't exactly high on the list.

POWER RANGERS Movie Breaks Ground with First Gay Big-Screen Superhero

Power Rangers is breaking down a barrier no superhero movie has before. The Lionsgate reboot of the '90s children's TV show is the first big-budget superhero movie to feature an LGBT protagonist.

During Power Rangers' second act, there's a scene in which the titular heroes learn that the Yellow Ranger Trini (Becky G) is coming to terms with her sexual orientation, with one character assuming she's having "boyfriend problems," and soon realizing that perhaps she's actually having "girlfriend problems." It's a small moment, but one director Dean Israelite calls "pivotal" for the entire film.

"For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is," Israelite tells The Hollywood Reporter. "She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'That's OK.' The movie is saying, 'That's OK,' and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."

Original Blue Ranger actor David Yost, who is openly gay and left the 1990s Power Rangers series after facing harassment over his sexual orientation, praised the new film for its inclusiveness.

"They really stepped up to the plate,” says Yost. “I think so many people in the LGBTQI community are going to be excited to see that representation.”

In the original Power Rangers series, the Yellow Ranger was played by the late actress Thuy Trang, who is credited as the character for 81 episodes from 1993-94 on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The original character was portrayed as straight.

    I'll probably see this.

I thought IW and its sequel started shooting in April? There's no way they've finished shooting, unless Cap is done his parts. I still say no way.

I'm going to assume it's China funding where marketing is more about hedging bets than promoting culturally, and rightfully, ostracized sub-groups.

Avengers-Style PRINCESSES Movie in the Works with Director Joachim Ronning

Paradigm’s David Boxerbaum and veteran lit manager Jake Wagner are out with a hot new spec titled Princesses that studios are salivating over since it’s described as a female-driven Avengers featuring classic fairy tale princesses.

Nir Paniry wrote the script and Lawrence Grey is set to produce under his Grey Matter banner.

The spec is being sent to all buyers simultaneously, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Ronning is attached to the package for Disney, and possibly other territories as well.

With the recent success of Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, Moana, and other narratives that promote strong, independent female characters, Princesses is coming out at the appropriate time. No word on which princesses are included in the action-adventure spec, but they’re likely iconic princesses popularized by Disney yet still in the public domain.

In addition to helming the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Ronning is also known for directing the adventure pic Kon-Tiki as well as directing episodes of Netflix’s Marco Polo.

Paniry is a veteran storyboard artists who wrote and directed the 2012 sci-fi drama Extracted featuring Ty Simpkins, as well as a handful of short films.

Disney Hit With Lawsuit Claiming ZOOTOPIA Ripped Off TOTAL RECALL Writer

Disney is now facing a serious lawsuit alleging that Oscar-winning animation film Zootopia was copied from the work of Gary L. Goldman, a reputable author whose distinguished credits includes writing Total Recall and Next and producing Minority Report.

The complaint filed on Tuesday in California federal court comes from Esplanade Productions, Inc., which is being represented by the prominent law firm of Quinn Emanuel.

It opens by quoting Zootopia director Byron Howard as saying, "Don’t worry if you feel like you’re copying something, because if it comes through you, it’s going to filter through you and you’re going to bring your own unique perspective to it."

In the lawsuit, Disney is alleged to have a track record of ripping off work including The Lion King, Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Up, Inside Out and more.

"They did it with Zootopia, too, when they copied Gary L. Goldman’s Zootopia," states the complaint. "Twice — in 2000 and 2009 — Goldman, on behalf of Esplanade, pitched Defendants his Zootopia franchise, which included a live-action component called Looney and an animated component called Zootopia. He provided a treatment, a synopsis, character descriptions, character illustrations and other materials. He even provided a title for the franchise: 'Zootopia.' Instead of lawfully acquiring Goldman’s work, Defendants said they were not interested in producing it and sent him on his way. Thereafter, consistent with their culture of unauthorized copying, Defendants copied Goldman’s work. They copied Goldman’s themes, settings, plot, characters, and dialogue — some virtually verbatim."

The complaint even illustrates alleged copying of artwork:

According to the complaint, Goldman has worked with Disney before. In 2007, he is said to have been hired to write a screenplay called Blaze based on a Stan Lee comic. Afterwards, Lee allegedly told him, "You're now my favorite writer!"

As for Zootopia, a film about a bunny who moves to a big city and unravels a conspiracy with the aid of a con artist fox, the lawsuit claims that its source is unmistakable given Goldman's detailed work offering descriptions about characters and other elements.

The lawsuit states that Goldman pitched former Disney executive and Mandeville Films’ CEO David Hoberman, at Disney's offices in 2000, and that everyone at the meeting "understood that writers pitch ideas and materials to studios and producers in confidence in order to sell those ideas and materials for financial compensation."

Hoberman responded favorably, continues the complaint, but his company ultimately passed.

Nine years later, Goldman tried again to pitch his project.

"At the time, Goldman was working on Blaze with Brigham Taylor who, Esplanade is informed and believes, was Walt Disney Pictures’ Executive Vice President of Production and Development at the time," continues the complaint. "Because Goldman had this existing relationship with Taylor, Goldman offered to pitch the Goldman Zootopia to Taylor on behalf of Defendants, and Taylor accepted Goldman’s offer. On or about February 12, 2009, Goldman met with Taylor at Defendants’ offices in Burbank, California."

Disney is then alleged to have begun work on its own Zootopia and reproduced substantially similar expression in alleged violation of plaintiff's copyrights. The lawsuit handled by attorney Jeffrey McFarland also claims breach of implied contract, breach of confidence and unfair competition. Disney's Zootopia grossed more than $1 billion worldwide in theaters, putting substantial damages on the line. Esplanade wants an injunction plus monetary damages including of the punitive kind.

A Disney spokesperson responds, "Mr. Goldman’s lawsuit is riddled with patently false allegations. It is an unprincipled attempt to lay claim to a successful film he didn’t create, and we will vigorously defend against it in court.”
