THE BATMAN Delayed as the Script is Reportedly Rewritten from Scratch

There are two ways to look at all of the noise surrounding The Batman, Ben Affleck‘s upcoming solo adventure as the Caped Crusader. One narrative is that Warner Bros. has no idea what to do with their DC comic book properties. The other is that The Batman is hitting speed bumps because everyone involved is actively working to get this one right and want to avoid disappointing fans who were let down by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.

It has already been reported that The Batman will be delayed due to director Matt Reeves‘ pre-existing commitments to another project. Now, /Film are hearing that the film is being completely rewritten from scratch.

That first piece of news comes our way via Variety’s Justin Kroll, who took to Twitter to report that Reeves is working on War For the Planet of the Apes until the end of June, confirming earlier reports from Mark Hughes at Forbes and Sean Gerber of the Batman News podcast. That means The Batman won’t even begin production until 2018 at the earliest, which means that the rumored 2018 release date is impossible.

Kroll also warned that Reeves won’t even meet with any actors until the summer, so outside of Ben Affleck himself, no casting rumors that pop up between now and then will carry much weight.

According to sources close to the production, the screenplay for The Batman is being rewritten from the ground up, so it’s entirely possible that everything we’ve heard about the film’s story will no longer be in play.

The original screenplay for The Batman was supposedly in flux last month, when it was initially reported that the studio was eyeing a “fresh start.” A day later, it was reported that everyone was happy with the latest draft. Affleck, Chris Terrio, and DC Comics writer and CCO Geoff Johns were among those who worked the first version of the screenplay, which reportedly featured Batman facing off against Deathstroke.

At this rate, a 2019 release for The Batman sounds about right. However, the more important thing is that Reeves and Affleck aim to make a great movie, not hit a release date.

‘The Batman’ Production Delayed Until 2018 as the Script is Rewritten From Scratch

SUICIDE SQUAD 2 Lands LEGEND OF TARZAN Screenwriter Adam Cozad

Adam Cozad, who wrote The Legend of Tarzan for Warner Bros., is in negotiations to pen the studio’s sequel to Suicide Squad.

The follow-up is a priority for Warners, which made overtures to several directors, including Mel Gibson. No filmmakers are currently attached, and the studio is focusing on nailing down a story.

David Ayer wrote (and directed) the 2016 movie, which had an all-star cast that included Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. The pic faced some hurdles during production and was met with a a somewhat polarizing response, but grossed $745 million worldwide, enough to put a follow-up on the fast-track.

Ayer is not returning for the sequel, and is instead focusing on developing Gotham City Sirens, a project that reunites him with Robbie and ]focuses on the female villains of the DC Universe.

Cozad is known for trafficking in the action and comic book realms. The scribe co-wrote 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit starring Chris Pine and penned Underwater, the adventure movie that is heating up at Fox with Kristen Stewart coming on board to star.

Cozad also worked on Bloodshot, the adaptation of the Valiant comic book, and The Gray Man, a Charlize Theron spy thriller. His Tarzan, which starred Alexander Skarsgard and Robbie, grossed over $356 million worldwide.

Scott Adkins, Michael Bisping, Michael Jai White Join Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais in TRIPLE THREAT

Ong Bak star Tony Jaa, The Raid breakout Iko Uwais and Tiger Chen (Man of Tai Chi) will square off against Scott Adkins (Zero Dark Thirty), UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping and action movie vet Michael Jai White in Triple Threat.

Jesse Johnson is directing the feature, which kicks off after a billionaire's daughter becomes the target of a mercenary cartel. Her only protection are two down-on-their-luck fighters and a third who has vowed revenge against the others.

Asian actors Jaa, Uwais and Chen are the protagonists, while American thespians Adkins, Bisping and White are the villains. Joey O’Bryan wrote the script. Production is to start in Bangkok on April.

The project was coming together last year but fell apart. It was reconstituted with a new director, script and setting (Mexico was on the books for the previous version), as well as a new set of bad guys. Also new is the financier: Shanghai Aurora Alliance is now bankrolling the film.

“I cannot tell you how excited I am about this film, it is unique,” Jaa said Tuesday in a statement. “I don’t think that anyone has seen a cast like this in a generation.”

Adkins was last seen fighting Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's Doctor Strange, while Bisping appeared in xXx: Return of Xander Cage and will be seen in an upcoming episode of Twin Peaks. White starred in 1997's Spawn and appeared in The Dark Knight. He also played the Bronze Tiger on The CW’s Arrow.

John Krasinski and Emily Blunt Team for Supernatural Thriller A QUIET PLACE

John Kraskinski and Emily Blunt are making a more perfect union. The husband and wife will star alongside one another for the first time in A Quiet Place, a Paramount supernatural thriller that Krasinski will also direct.

Platinum Dunes, which produced The Purge with Blumhouse Productions, is going the low-budget route again with Quiet Place, which is a semi-contained thriller set on a farm where a family is being terrorized by evil.

Krasinski is doing triple-duty here, as he also worked on the script (Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are the other writers). Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes are producing.

Quiet Place will be Krasinski’s third time behind the camera (the dramedy The Hollars was his last outing) and first for a studio. He will next be seen in Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Detroit race-riots drama. Blunt is currently shooting Mary Poppins Returns for Disney.

Sony's VENOM Movie Gets a Release Date, Reportedly Nabs Alex Kurtzman as Director

The Marvel universe is expanding yet again, but this time in an unexpected way. It seems the Spider-Man universe will spawn a new solo Venom film, which has now been slated for October 5, 2018.

The tweet came from Exhibitor Relations, saying "Watch out, Spider-man. VENOM is now part of the release calendar web as Sony has slated the Spidey spinoff for October 5, 2018."

According to reports, it looks like Alex Kurtzman will be directing the film. Fans will know the director from his work on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and The Mummy.

Here’s what Exhibitor Relations had to say about the director:

“Alex Kurtzman, writer of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and director of THE MUMMY reboot will be at the helm of Sony's VENOM.”

The project was teased before in the Sony emails, but plans had moved away from that at some point. Now it seems the character is once again going to be a big part of the universe.

[Update: According to THR, Venom has no director yet, but does have a script: Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, the latter who worked on 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, recently turned in a draft. (Dante Harper wrote a previous draft.)]

Henry Cavill Joins Tom Cruise in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6

Henry Cavill has accepted an impossible mission, as the Man of Steel star will be appearing in the next installment of Paramount’s Mission Impossible franchise.

The announcement was made tonight in a tongue-in-cheek Instragram post by Mission Impossible 6 director Christopher McQuarrie.

“Had a thought. Curious if you’re interested in a role in the 6th installment of Mission: Impossible. No pressure,” McQuarrie asked in the post.

“How can I say no to a man with such perfect hair…..” replied Cavill from his own Instagram account.

“Excellent," McQuarrie said. "Just a few caveats: must enjoy extreme heights, high speeds, motor vehicles of all varieties (especially aircraft), practical stunts, firearms, and sporadic exposition. All good?”

    “Oh ok…..I’m in!” Cavill replied.

Cavill will join Tom Cruise while Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner are also expected to return in the upcoming Paramount release, set to hit theaters in 2018.

Seems like pandering to the Mexican American crowd, especially with what's happening with Trump and "the Wall". They probably think, "Well this movie can't fail with one demographic for sure $$$"

GTFO. Do you not know how long the lead times are on animation projects like this? The idea was pitched back in 2010 and Pixar announced development on the project in 2012.

New MATRIX Movie is Not a Reboot or Remake According to Writer Zak Penn

A couple of screenwriters -- including the one actually writing the thing -- have weighed in on that new Matrix project that broke the Internet earlier this week.

The good news is that they've more or less confirmed that whatever is being developed by Warner Bros. is in fact not a reboot or remake of the original movie or trilogy. Zak Penn, the screenwriter the studio hired to pen the piece, took to Twitter to clear a few things up:

“All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT The Matrix,” Penn wrote on Twitter. “People who know Animatrix and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words 'reboot' and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of The Matrix? Yes. Because it’s a brilliant idea that generates great stories.”

"If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves," Penn added. "Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it's a brilliant idea that generates great stories. Look at what people are doing with Xmen universe. Between Logan and Legion and Deadpool, does anyone want them to stop? Not me."

Writer Eric Heisserer (Arrival) pointed to another recent example of what Penn is alluding to:

"I know people are slinging the words 'reboot' and 'remake' around some iconic films, but I wouldn't be so quick to believe that,". Heisserer said on Twitter. "From what I've been hearing, studios are instead asking the question, 'How can we ROGUE ONE a story in our own franchises?' That may be what's going on here. Expanding timelines and worlds to follow maybe one familiar character and a bunch of new ones."

Alicia Vikander to Fight Underground Monsters in Ben Wheatley's FREAKSHIFT

Alicia Vikander is in talks to star in Ben Wheatley’s hotly anticipated project Freakshift, an all-guns-blazing action thriller about a band of misfits who hunt down and kill nocturnal underground monsters.

Should the deal make, the much-in-demand Vikander would play the lead female protagonist in the cops-vs.-monsters tale. Deadline hears the project is eyeing an August start date, which would fit in with Vikander’s schedule as she’s due to wrap Tomb Raider in early summer.

Freakshift looks set to be even more badass and more ambitious, with Wheatley directing from script he co-wrote with writing partner Amy Jump.

Wheatley's first directorial feature was the 2009 Brit gangster breakout Down Terrace. Since then, he’s helmed cult chiller Kill List, horror comedy Sightseers, low-budget A Field in England, an adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High Rise as well as Free Fire.
