Brief Teaser Trailer for DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

9zyqom.jpg

Ahead of this week's release of the first trailer for next year's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox has released a 12-second teaser of what lies ahead in our primate-led future -- but don't expect too many spoilers. All that we actually learn from the teaser is that someone wants to speak to Caesar, the ape that led the uprising in the previous installment of the rebooted franchise.

Unfortunately, given that all we see is the text of the dialogue appear on screen against a backdrop of a forest -- presumably the Marin Headlands that the apes disappeared into at the end of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes -- we don't even get a hint of just who that person is, never mind why they want to speak to him. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes also stars Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Judy Greer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Toby Kebbell and opens July 11, 2014.

All Three AVATAR Sequels Will Be Filmed in New Zealand

Avatar-Daytime-Pandora-Jungle-Dragonlord.jpg

New Zealand’s small army of proficient film crews have been working on The Hobbit, and now it appears they’ll have another mammoth trilogy to tackle. James Cameron has issued a statement that he plans to shoot Avatar 2, Avatar 3, and Avatar 4 in New Zealand. According to The Wrap, the three sequels will be shot at the same time, and perhaps over a period of about nine months. Obviously, this is great news for the small country as Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce said in a statement, "The Avatar sequels will provide hundreds of jobs and thousands of hours of work directly in the screen sector as well as jobs right across the economy."

Of course, this works to 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment’s benefit as well. The Wrap reports, New Zealand’s government has agreed to a 25 percent financial rebate, up from the current 15 percent, and Cameron expects the budget on all three sequels to come in beneath $1 billion, which is surprising when you consider that the first film was reported to have cost $500 million. Avatar 2 is set for December 2016 followed by Avatar 3 in December 2017 and then Avatar 4 in December 2018.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Nears Deal to Direct and Star in SANDMAN

Joseph-Gordon-Levitt-Sandman-Dragonlord.jpg

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is finalizing a deal to produce Sandman at Warner Bros with David Goyer, who pitch his treatment for the Neil Gaiman comic book classic. It has been rumored that Gordon-Levitt might star, and the deal he’s making attaches him as the protagonist. I’m told that in addition to that, he’s eyeing the project as a directing vehicle. Gordon-Levitt made his feature directorial debut on the well received Sundance pic Don Jon, but this would be a considerable step up in scope and scale. They will hire a writer shortly.

The Sandman series shifts between horror and fantasy, and the central character is Morpheus, the personification of dreams. After being held captive 70 years, Morpheus escapes, gains revenge and rebuilds his crumbling kingdom while trying to adapt to the times. Warner Bros has tried for sometime to get a script right, but they may have finally cracked it.

Warner Bros is high on Gordon-Levitt after he starred in the Batfilm and Inception, and this would be a highly original potential franchise, if Goyer, Gordon-Levitt and Warner Bros could pull it off. It has that cool factor like Looper did. Gordon-Levitt next stars in another seminal graphic novel-based film, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, which Robert Rodriguez and creator Frank Miller helmed.

Shia LaBeouf's New Short Plagiarizes Daniel Clowes' Comic

2jc7z8k.jpg

Shia LaBeouf is at the center of a plagiarism controversy after graphic novelist Daniel Clowes has accused the star of borrowing shamelessly from his 2007 comic, Justin M. Damiano, for a short film directed by the Charlie Countryman star. That film, Howard Cantour -- which follows the inner dialogue of a disgruntled film critic -- debuted last May at the Cannes Film Festival, where no one in attendance seemed to notice that the characters and dialogue had been lifted directly from Clowes' panels. But when the film debuted online on Monday, the Internet was quick to take notice.

Jacqueline Cohen, director of publicity and promotions for Fantagraphics Books, Inc., Clowes' publisher, calls the film "a complete rip-off" of Justin M. Damiano, and says Clowes was never approached by LaBeouf to authorize the work's adaptation. "He had no knowledge that he had been plagiarized until today when the film was posted on Vimeo," Cohen tells THR. As word quickly spread of LaBeouf's alleged intellectual property theft, due in part to a story on BuzzFeed, the short film was quickly blocked from view on Vimeo, its hosting site. BuzzFeed is hosting Howard Cantour, which stars Jim Gaffigan as a self-loathing film critic, in its entirety.

Update: LaBeouf has apologized on Twitter for the controversy, writing in a series of tweets that his "excitement and naivete" led him to forget to "follow proper accreditation." His full statement follows:

"Copying isn't particularly creative work. Being inspired by someone else's idea to produce something new and different IS creative work. In my excitement and naivet

2014 looks to be another outstanding year for sci-fi.
Interstellar, Jupiter Rising (its a shame they cast Meg Griffin in that movie, it looks amazing), Tomorrowland, and Edge of Tomorrow.

Also, after seeing the 47 Ronin trailer ahead of Smaug the Stupendous, I think it might be pretty good.

James Cameron Talks Underwater Scenes for AVATAR Sequels

2yxnhtx.jpg

Last night, it was reported that James Cameron would shoot all three Avatar sequels over the course of nine months in New Zealand. Today, he’s provided some new information about the plot for the upcoming trilogy. Story details have been scarce, especially since the sequels were expanded to three movies as opposed to just two. When it was just Avatar 2 and Avatar 3, the sequels were reportedly about wrapping up the relationship between Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). While that may still be part of the plan even with another film in the mix, Cameron has revealed some lofty aspirations for how he plans to explore Pandora and expand Jake’s story.

Speaking to the AP, Cameron clarified the role ocean life would play in the upcoming movies: “There’s a fair bit of underwater stuff. It’s been inaccurately said that the second film takes place underwater. That’s not true. There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films. I mean the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come.”

But the most ambitious part of Cameron’s plan isn’t the design of Pandora, but where he’s going to take Jake’s story: “We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It’s really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like ‘The Godfather.’”

First Trailer for 3 DAYS TO KILL Starring Kevin Costner

2vjomkz.jpg

The first trailer and poster for McG‘s 3 Days to Kill, starring Kevin Costner, are now online. Costner plays an international spy who’s trying to set aside his violent profession in order to reconnect with his estranged wife (Connie Nielsen) and daughter (Hailee Steinfeld), but his handler (Amber Heard) ropes him back into more work for the agency. The “violent guy with special skills plus estranged daughter” plot will inevitably invite comparisons to Taken, but 3 Days to Kill looks like it has a much lighter tone and more absurd action (although it will be tough to top Taken 2‘s scene where grenades are used to calculate distance). 3 Days to Kill opens February 21, 2014.

Synopsis: In this heart pounding action-thriller, Kevin Costner is a dangerous international spy, who is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter, whom he’s previously kept at arm’s length to keep out of danger. But first, he must complete one last mission- even if it means juggling the two toughest assignments yet: hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist and looking after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years, while his wife is out of town.

First Trailer for Time-Travel Thriller WELCOME TO YESTERDAY

10qxi6g.jpg

Paramount just unveiled the first trailer for the found-footage time travel film Welcome to Yesterday (originally titled Almanac). While up in his attic, David (Jonny Weston) stumbles upon his late father’s old video camera and a set of blueprints. Turns out, his dad had the key to time travel and now, with the help of his sister Christina (Ginny Gardner), two buddies Quinn and Adam (Sam Lerner and Allen Evangelista), and his crush Jessie (Sofia Black-D’Elia), David is determined to put his dad’s unrealized plans to use. After building their very own time machine, the gang takes a pass on meeting a deceased hero or experiencing a historical event and, as many teens would, they opt to have some fun at a music festival.

The film came about after Platinum Dunes began looking for a project with a smaller budget in a similar vein to last year's hit Chronicle. They soon came across a spec script from writers Andrew Stark and Jason Pagan titled "Almanac," a found-footage movie about time travel. The central theme of the film is the question, "If you had a time machine, what would you do?" Directed by Dean Israelite (Jonathan Liebesman’s cousin), written by Jason Pagan and Andrew Stark, Welcome to Yesterday opens on February 28, 2014.
