Is the United States of America a Banana Republic?

Depends how it happened. Manufacturing is about 11.8% of U.S. GDP, and aircraft is one of the biggest chunks of that piece. So if it just suddenly stopped for no reason, that would be a blow. But that doesn't mean that the U.S. is relying on a single crop (also, given your job, I'm sure you know that aircraft are made by humans and do not grow on trees).

Mexico is not a banana republic by the normal definition (FFS, it has the 15th largest economy in the world). If you want to change the definition to call Mexico one, my main question would be why? You can still discuss corruption in gov't without changing the meanings and usages of words.

There you go Jack. I like this version of Jack much better.

If Mexico is not a banana Republic in your book, then the academic use of the word, has departed from the common use of the word.

I think the vast majority of Mexicans and Americans would call Mexico a Banana Republic. I think this makes the academic use of the phrase at best outmoded, and at worst obsolete.

“The most recent exports are led by Planes, Helicopters, and/or Spacecraft which represent 4.47% of the total exports of the United States, followed by Refined Petroleum, which account for 4.33%.“

Yeah that’s not a banana republic.

What % of US exports does just commercial aircraft make up?

That's very much incorrect. In common usage, the term refers to small countries with economies based on single crops or foreign capital.

Wrong.

I'm asking because I know commercial airplanes by themselves are the largest exporter in the US. I imagine when added with trillion dollars F-35's that number goes from being large to enormous.

I don't actually know the numbers, thought you had a source handy, so I was actually asking.

You would be way better off limiting it to not just crops but any single commodity based economy that results in a corrupt and ineffective govt. Many ME countries qualify. Otherwise the term has no meaning.

Common use does tend to be amorphic, so that is a reasonable point against it's validity, and yet common use also seems to be the only use that is valid in many ways.

Sorry I just know the USA is highly diversified economy and looked up the above from a few sources. I am assuming that everything u mentioned is rolled up into that number though.

I think this definition works pretty well

“In political science, the term banana republic describes a politically unstable country with an economy dependent upon the exportation of a limited-resource product, e.g. bananas, minerals, etc.“

I would replace limited resource with “commodity” as bananas are not limited.

If we use “common” definitions we are back to abusing all sorts of terms like “socialist”. When asking is x country qualifies as x, best to use a reasonable accepted term for x.

Then we could actually discuss what you seem to want to talk about,” is the USA one of the most politically corrupt countries in the word?”.

Ehhh.

I think you know what I am doing here. I am trying to undermine legitimacy through psychologically impactful verbage, as I believe our government does not deserve legitimacy.

For that reason, the common use of the word, is quite useful to me.

Also, I thought it would generate interesting discussion. Not disappointed so far.

You're making the odd assertion that Mexico is widely considered to be a banana republic. I'm saying it's not. Would be easier for you to demonstrate your point. That said, here:

Banana Republic has been adopted by a lot of countries in different continents in the past centuries and it is still prevalent. A continent wise Banana Republic countries list can be given as follows.
  • Banana Republic Countries in Asia: Bangladesh, Laos, Maldives and Philippines
  • Banana Republic Countries in Europe: NA
  • Banana Republic Countries in Africa: Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria and Zambia.
  • All North American Banana Republic Countries: Cuba, Guatemala and Honduras
  • Banana Republic Countries in South America: Chile

Mexico not listed.

No mention of Mexico, definition doesn't apply to Mexico.

That is a academic article.

I don't think he's a congressman just he's running for Congress. There's a thread here from a month or so back about it. Last name was ojeda I believe. I don't think it's just him saying it to troll people seemed like something he genuinely believes.
Thanks, I’ll have to check. I have to imagine he’s speaking hyperbolically. If not, he’s probably had his brains scrambled around a little too much by IEDs. The two just aren’t comparable.

Holy fuck Viva just admit you used the wrong term and move on. Christ is running out of blood.

Corrupt oligarchic police state would be a better debate.

He is more than willing to die on this hill and have mocking limericks sung about him in all of the taverns of Warruhmvania.
