Holy Gracie Combatives

haha that cant be even close to fighting. BJJ doesnt involve athletic ability although it really helps to have it. To play ball man you gotta be extremely athletic. Basketball involves probably the most athletic ability out of any other sports, so it cant be compared to BJJ. Trust me ive played basketball since I was 4 went on to play college bball b4 quitting. You got to be athletic or extremely tall to be good at basketball plain and simple. Not a good comparison.

how tall and athletic was John Stockton?

you can play any sport with skill.

Gretsky, Messi etc etc

No...no you would not be able to play stall ball enough to do that. You think your close guard is good enough to stop anyone who has actually trained any guard breaking at all?

Why do I keep getting suckered in to this troll?

Listen man. that is great if you get out of my gaurd. Im still going to play stall ball the whole time i will probably lock my arms if you even got close to touching them. I would lock one arm and keep one arm over top your neck/head locked to my other arm (its hard to explain what im trying to say here I would have to demonstrate). I highly doubt most people on this forum would over power me. I would stay like that the whole entire time no matter if you mounted me, gaurd, or in side mount ( I would have to change my positioning if you side mounted me, but I know exactly what i would do to play defense. I dont see how you would play offense. If I control your head and lock one arm its hard for anybody to do anything unless I make a move, which I wouldnt do.

Because BJJ has a very low tolerance for BS. It's part of the western paradigm and philosophy,

Hold in guard? You're high. You see, there's these things called "leglocks." Sambosteve might be able to tell you something about them and the damage they can do. If you think you could hold someone in place for 2 hours, you REALLY need to go to a BJJ school.

You dont have to be tall. Im saying you have to be tall OR you have to be athletic one of the two. John Stockton was athletic. His skill level was off the chart for a point gaurd. He made passes that were unheard of back in his day lol. He led the league in three pointers a few years I believe. It takes athletic ability to just make a move and take a jumper and make the jumper. I bet most ppl who are at the age now could not pick up basketball and be good at it, if they didnt start at an early age. It requires so much athletic ability and practice. It takes athletic ability to make a shot consitently with pressure on you. The little things in basketball is hard for most ppl.

You get me in a leg lock i kick you in the face. lol. I could definately lose on a leg lock for sure. Like I said though I am not going to let you move in my gaurd I will hold your head down and lock my arms together one being around an arm and the other around your neck. I WILL NOT let you move to do a leg lock. I would try not to give you breathing room. Also like I said before i highly doubt you all would over power me. lol

Also I said you all would more than likely beat me in rolling. Im not saying I would win, so this shouldnt be an argument.

I offered to fly him to Houston for GB, or to DFW to roll with me on my dime already.

There is a difference...people like you have never stepped on the mat. You remind me of the liberal college kid learning liberal/socialist theories on campus and saying...this sounds like this would work in real life and trying to convince those with real world experience...he Look I read this in a textbook, I know it will work, even though I've never actually experienced anything of the sort.

My dad has always told me old age, treachery, and experience will always over come strength, youth, and ideals.

I offer you the same thing as GJJ fighter, I'll fly you down to my gym, you tap me with your online skills (i'm a 6 month WB) and your trip is free.

Way to go challenging me, I haven't even started learning yet. How about you come up here & I'll roll with you. Sense you don't mind spending the money, feel free to drive to KCMO or KCK & I'll roll with you. I have nothing to lose but if I tap you, you'll be a laughing stock.

...you mean cow. He shot a cow.

The thing is, Jim Carrey was a police officer(in the movie) and he didn't learn how to shoot that gun through watching videos. He had to pass a marksmanship test. Come to think of it -- actors go for special training when they have to work with guns in a movie -- AND... by law they must have a police officer(black belt on guns) on set to oversee the use of the guns, to make sure everything is being operated safely.

God you're a lame. Yes it was a cow, thanks for the correction. But then you go on to compare a joke that had nothing to do with the debate, it was a joke regarding the thread & you try to tie it into the debate.

meh I differante betwen athletic and skills

Some play their game/sport based on physical prowess, other do it with their technical skills

Put Maias skills in Brocks body and WOW, the other way around meh

I would more than likely lose if I ROLLED with a sportive blue belt who does competitions and most of the things they learn is subs and counters w/o being set up by strikes. Everything I have learned is set up by strikes. I dont know hardly any submissions without strikes being thrown. I have just learned how to beat a striker and about 5 lessons in the mastercycle.

I didn't read though this whole thread, or even browse it too much. But this particular post caught my eye. Doesn't striking + submission wrestling = MMA? I mean if you want to learn both striking and submissions, and how to use them to set things up, why don't you just train at an MMA gym?

I guess it's possible that you could live in a more rural area and, there isn't a gym near you. In which case trying to learn online, and then practicing techniques with a group of like minded people makes sense and is probably the next best thing.

...lol...Everytime you "lock" something down you "open" something else up. I would overpower your 170 lb scrawny ass if I had too, or I could just use proper technique and there wouldn't be any need to overpower you.

What you don't grasp is there are techniques to force you to open up from mount, guard, side control. You don't see how because you have no real experience. There is not way to effectively play 100% lock down BJJ/Defensive Jiu Jitsu and not leave something open in any position.

Seriously I got sucked back in damnit...

You haven't started learning yet, yet you know how to learn by watching DVD's? Does this actually make sense in your own head?

That's exactly what I was going to say. "I know the best way to learn, even though I haven't actually learned anything!"

Frighteningly enough the answer will probably be yes.

haha seriously man I would like to come down in the summer if im available to. I know something will open up of course, but no matter what happens im gonna try my best to play stall ball from every position. You would not over power me unless you can bench more than 255 (I went up finally) barbell curl 100 more than 8 time negative curls and im not even gonna go into my back, tri's, and shoulders lol, I neglect my legs the only workout they get is cardio, basketball, and training, so you probably have me beat on the legs lol. I am not scrawny, I am a pretty solid guy. Dont let my weight decieve you. Although yes proper technique beats strength 100 percent of the time! I will not say I would win, but I have to say you wouldnt over power me. :icon_chee

Oh gosh are you seriously talking about Bench Press. That is one of the biggest internet jokes on the internet.

I bench teh 275.

I dont learn striking. Although I have before. The Gracie Jiu Jitsu blue belt cirricullum is designed to beat a striker by just using pure Gracie Jiu Jitsu. All i was saying is I want them to show me they could beat a solid athletic stronger striker using there jiu jitsu and if they wanted to test me then they could put the gloves on and try to strike me and I would use pure Gracie Jiu Jitsu to win.

Well congrats you are stronger than the average guy. lol. Not many guys bench that much that arent gym rats. Your only 20 pounds stronger than me thats not too much.

GJJ fighter - If you haven't trained striking arts then saying you'll "knock someone's head off" is as rediculous as saying you'll stall a reall Jiu Jitsu player not "allowing" him to submit you. You don't have to allow it, it's just going to happen. :icon_lol:

First you were saying you could beat an unskilled striker in the street. Okay, maybe. But, now you're saying you can stall out a real fighter or real Jiu Jitsu player and not get submitted or knocked out. You're in for a reality check if you ever step foot in a real gym.

And you kick someone in the face during rolling then you have a real fight on your hands and if you've never stepped foot in a real gym you are going to get tooled.

It seems that you think your conditioning from playing basketball or brute strength will carry you through a match with a real Jiu Jitsu player. Unfortunately you're completely wrong there. Every person here who trains sees athletic people walk into the gym for their first time constantly. These people, no matter what sport it is they excell at, gas out when they start doing circuit training and rolling and all that is involved in training Jiu Jitsu or MMA in a real gym.

A real fight with a skilled opponent requires a great deal of stamina which is why most fighters put themselves through hell to gain that stamina. It's not the same kind of stamina required for swimming (which I did competitively for most of my life) and it's not the same as playing basketball. It's a completely different thing.

I'm not trying to belittle you here, it's good that you're interested in improving yourself. But, at this point you're getting to be insulting to those of us that actually train with real instructors.

(I also know I might as well be talking to a wall so don't bother with a point by point break down of my post, this is all I have to say to you and you won't absorb one thing from it because you know it all already.)

Wow you definetly don't know internet jokes. The whole thing is that people are gotten to when they start talking about how much they can bench press. The internet cliche joke is to say you "can bench teh 275."

1. I have trained striking art before. :D

2. Yes I would beat the average guy on the streets. No Im saying I would try to stall, not saying it would work the whole time like I wanted it to, but yes I would try. lol I said I would most likely lose if I was rolling.

3. A real fight would be ok with me, then I would get to test them with strikes to see if they train sportive or not lol.

4. I agree with you a 100 percent on the rolling. I just started rolling with my partner in the master cycle we encorporate strikes while we do it though. I can only go for 5-7 mins at a time before im completely gased out. It was weird in basketball I could run a mile in 5:15, but its a different kind of conditioning when it comes to BJJ.

Also got respect for you man. My sister is a heck of a swimmer. Swimming is a whole different conditioning as well. I was asked to swim because I am a pretty good free style swimmer and I thought it was gonna be easy to swim 50 meters. Yeah right, It was awful I felt like a rock when I had about 10 meters to go. lol. I told the coach that I would have to get in swimming shape before i swam and then I didnt end up swimming.
