GSP Officially No Longer Middleweight Champion - Vacates the Belt.

GSP would always scared of fighting the true elite MWs. Ducked Anderson in his. And now the division got better with Whittaker, Rockhold, Romero hunting for the belt and guys like Jacare, Weidman and Brunson not too far behind to get back into title contention. Bisping was a mediocre champion
 
Disappointed. Big Fan of St Pierre. But at least the right guys get to fight for the real belt.
 
Well it was the right decision to give it up, knowing you won't be back anytime soon from your illness. I hope he recovers, I know that condition sticks with you for the rest of your life, so hopefully they can manage it.

After becoming the fourth UFC fighter to hold belts in more than one division just over one month ago by defeating Michael Bisping at UFC 216 at Madison Square Garden, Canadian Georges St-Pierre is vacating the belt that earned him that piece of history.

The UFC announced on Thursday that St-Pierre vacates his middleweight title effective immediately.

As a result, interim champion Robert Whittaker has been elevated to the undisputed middleweight title holder.

Whittaker will make his first official title defence on Feb.10 at UFC 221 in Perth, Australia against former champion, third-ranked Luke Rockhold in the organization’s first event in Western Australia. The five round fight will be made official pending commission approval, which will be an unlikely hurdle.

St-Pierre released the following statement via the UFC:

“My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health. Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division. I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.”

The guy should have asterisk next to his MW title win and anyone that calls him GOAT.
 
A true champion...not like someone who runs around boxing and shoving refs.

Ariel Helwani insists to this day that the Hendo fight was the UFC's idea, not Bisping's, and he's not usually the type of guy to get that kinda stuff wrong.
 
Eh, as much as I respect George, I could care less, Whittaker has fought and beat the who's who of the Middleweight division, GSP obviously wanted no parts of The Reaper and wants to look for a money fight. I ain't mad at em, he vacated, things are moving along, and now Robert can become the Undisputed Middleweight Champion.
 
Whittaker was the real middleweight champion, anyways.
 
And he did what was right so you all have no room to bitch about anything. As long as he is healthy he will come back to welterweight and i think win that title back for the third time.
 
gsp's win over bisping is less impressive than anderson's over forrest griffin

Who really didn't expect this? He doesn't want to defend a title, he spent his career doing that. He wants money fights and Bobby is not a money fight.
