The problem with vegan/vegetarian diets is there are only a few protein sources available. Omnivores can consume red meat, poultry, seafood, soy, hemp, nuts, etc. This variety of protein is far superior to a diet that solely consists of non-animal sources.
Diets with the majority of protein coming from soy can have many negative effects. People have already talked about the decrease on testosterone. However, there are other documented effects. Lab mice raised on a soy based diet give birth to female mice with deformed ovaries resulting in sterility. My sister supervises a lab that is currently studying the relationship between a soy-based diet and testicular cancer.
