How can it circle a flat earth? Wouldn't we experience a period of complete darkness across the flat portion?

I don't subscribe to the belief that the sun is flat, even though that is a possibility. That said I think night "explains" the physiology of that physics.

Even if it is a sphere, if it circled the flat earth - whilst it was on the underside, wouldn't the top be in complete and utter darkness?
 
There is evidence that the entire universe may be a 2 dimensional hologram.
If the entire universe is flat, would that not make the earth flat as well?
