Actually you are incorrect, 'Great Britain' constitutes the actual island, so Northern Ireland isn't included. You are thinking of the 'United Kingdom'.

Yes, but 'British' means from the UK. If he wanted to limit it to Great Britain he should have said 'fighters from GB', not 'British fighters'.
