If you were an extremely intelligent person with a masters in engineering, would you be an engineer and get paid to design great things or would you teach engineering?

Sure there are many intelligent academics but it is definitely not the norm. "Those who can't do, teach."

In many cases they do both. Brian Cox is a particle physicist who works at CERN while also being a fellow at university of Manchester if I'm not mistaken where he teaches

And most academics don't just jump straight into teaching, my supervisor for example worked in a bunch of firms before he started lecturing
